Heinz ketchup was beloved in China but locked into western fast-food occasions, reaching only about 30% of Chinese households. To grow, it had to enter everyday Chinese cooking without fighting soy sauce and vinegar head-on — so Heinz and agency Zany anchored on tomato scrambled egg, the country's most-made home dish.

Print real family stories on 10,000 eggs — the ingredient in every tomato-scrambled-egg dish — and let the dish itself sell the ketchup.

Heinz collected 2,000 real consumer stories about tomato scrambled eggs, chose the ten most moving, and — after solving how to print on thin eggshells — put them on 10,000 eggs from premium egg brand Huang Tian'e, distributed through Hema (盒马) stores with paired in-store displays. Online, a 'show your egg' photo contest ran on Xiaohongshu, WeChat and Douyin, and the chosen stories were remade into short films and street shutter-door ads during the Spring Festival.

Exposure passed 160M with 99% of content user-generated; co-mentions of Heinz and tomato scrambled egg rose 308%. On Douyin e-commerce, Heinz ketchup sales grew 114% year-on-year, market share hit a record 31.8%, and household penetration rose 18 basis points. The work won the 2025 Jin Tong Award Grand Prix in the sales-growth category and Digitaling's 2025 media-marketing gold.

By early 2025 Heinz ketchup was the synonym for western dipping sauce in China — loved, but present in only about 30% of homes. Its growth ceiling was the low-frequency occasions of fries and fried chicken. To sell more, Heinz had to be invited into everyday Chinese cooking, a category guarded by soy sauce and vinegar for centuries.

Instead of a frontal campaign, Heinz and agency Zany made the country's most universal home dish the Trojan horse. Tomato scrambled egg is the first dish millions of Chinese learn to cook, and its classic flaw — pale, sour tomatoes that never soften into sauce — is exactly what concentrated tomato ketchup fixes. Around that dish, Heinz built a story engine: it collected 2,000 genuine consumer memories, picked ten, and printed them onto 10,000 real eggs from premium egg brand Huang Tian'e, after solving the technical problem of printing on thin, brittle shells.

The printed eggs appeared in Hema stores across China beside paired Heinz and egg displays; online, a 'show your egg' lottery pushed photos and stories through Xiaohongshu, WeChat and Douyin, while short films and street shutter-door posters retold the same family moments. The dish itself — not a billboard — carried the pitch: add Heinz and the tomato scrambled egg comes out right.

Results supported the move: total exposure exceeded 160M with 99% user-generated content, joint mentions of Heinz and tomato scrambled egg rose 308%, Douyin ketchup sales climbed 114% year-on-year, market share reached a record 31.8% and household penetration gained 18 basis points. The campaign took the 2025 Jin Tong Award Grand Prix (sales-growth category) plus Digitaling's 2025 media-marketing gold and cross-category silver.

The egg is already present in the exact moment of cooking, so the medium could not be skipped or scrolled past — it is picked up and looked at.

Printing consumers' own family stories made the message feel like shared memory rather than advertising.

The national dish gave Heinz a culturally loaded story (home, first cooking lesson, nostalgia) without fighting condiment categories directly.

Partnering with Huang Tian'e doubled the channels and made a closed loop: eggs, ketchup and the dish all point at each other in-store.

Look for the item that already appears in the customer's usage moment and turn it into the medium: the message travels inside the behavior you want to change, not as a separate ad.

Heinz China kept building on the dish-based playbook, and the agency cited its 'narrative set' method (product, user, partner and social stories) as a repeatable model for the campaign. The case became a frequently referenced example of 'everything is media' in Chinese marketing — finding a product's companion object in the consumption scene and letting that object carry the brand message — and was highlighted in 2026 industry recaps of the 2025 Jin Tong winners.
