Flipkart's Hagglebot brings bargaining to Google Assistant — first Creative eCommerce GP
Shoppers bargain aloud with a Google Assistant bot during Big Billion Days; the best haggle sets the official price — $1.23M GMV, Spikes 2019 Grand Prix.
Flipkart
What it had to solve
For its flagship Big Billion Days sale, Flipkart wanted a digital experience that felt Indian; e-commerce had stripped away the street-market ritual of haggling for the best price.
How it works
In India, shopping has always included bargaining — haggling the price down in a street market. As commerce moved online, that ritual disappeared behind fixed prices and discount codes. For Big Billion Days, Flipkart's biggest sale, the brand teamed with Dentsu Webchutney and Google Zoo to bring it back in the new marketplace: the phone itself.
The team researched 30 bazaars across three cities, recording how shopkeepers and customers actually negotiate, then simulated those exchanges in a Google Assistant voice experience. Users said 'OK Google, talk to Flipkart', picked the day's product, and argued with the Hagglebot for a better price; the customer who drove the hardest bargain was crowned 'Boss', and the price they won became the official Flipkart price for everyone.
Hagglebot ran on Android, iOS and Google Home, releasing two limited-edition products daily that were available only through the conversation. According to Dentsu Webchutney, the bargained products drove $1.23 million in GMV, and users stayed in the experience an average of 6 minutes 5 seconds — roughly 200 times the average Google Assistant session, making it the platform's most engaging project at the time.
The idea travelled beyond India: Spikes Asia 2019 gave it the first-ever Grand Prix in the new Creative eCommerce category, Cannes Lions 2019 added a Bronze, and Kyoorius awarded the Black Elephant. It became a reference point for voice commerce in India.
Why it lands
- It transplants a real, loved cultural ritual instead of inventing a new shopping behavior, so the interface is already familiar.
- It makes the customer the co-creator of the price — the winner's bargain becomes the price everyone pays, turning commerce into play.
- Voice removes typing barriers in a multilingual market, making the sale accessible to new internet users who prefer speech.
- The mechanics — two exclusive drops a day and a 'Boss' title — manufactured urgency and earned media without media spend.
What it did
Bargained products generated $1.23M in GMV; sessions averaged 6 minutes 5 seconds, about 200x the average Google Assistant session and the platform's biggest engagement. Hagglebot won Spikes Asia 2019 Creative eCommerce Grand Prix — the category's first — plus a Cannes Lions Bronze and Kyoorius Black Elephant.
What you can take
Don't invent a new behavior for a new interface — find the beloved offline ritual users already have and rebuild it faithfully in the channel; the familiar behavior carries the new technology.
Since then
After the 2018 Big Billion Days, Hagglebot kept collecting awards into 2019: the first Creative eCommerce Grand Prix at Spikes Asia, a Bronze at Cannes Lions, and the Kyoorius Black Elephant in India. Flipkart and Google continued investing in voice commerce, and Dentsu Webchutney built on the same voice expertise with later work such as 'Voice of Hunger' for Swiggy. The seasonal voice app itself only ran during the sale window and is no longer live.
