Dove Hair prints Reddit's unfiltered reviews — r/eal Reviews wins 6 Lions

Dove asked Reddit to review its hair mask, then built the campaign from the first 50 replies — praise and criticism, word for word.

What it had to solve

Cosmetics marketing faced a credibility crisis: sponsored positivity and fake reviews made every polished testimonial suspect. Dove, whose Real Beauty platform had always leaned on real women's voices, had its most-awarded hair repair mask of 2025 — the Intensive Repair 10-in-1 Serum Mask — and needed a way to prove it rather than praise it.

How it works

By 2026, beauty marketing faced a crisis of credibility: paid praise, sponsored positivity and fake reviews made it hard to believe any claim a brand paid for. Dove had built its Real Beauty platform on real women's testimonials, so when it launched the Dove Intensive Repair 10-in-1 Serum Mask — its most-awarded hair repair mask of 2025 — the question was how a testimonial could still be trusted.

Dove's answer, with DAVID London and Madrid, AKQA Paris and WPP Media, was to hand the product to Reddit, a community famous for treating brands harshly. A subreddit post asking for reviews promised feedback would be published unfiltered and unscripted, even if negative. The post quickly drew hundreds of comments and upvotes, mixing praise like "Please don't ever change this product!!!!!" with critique like "I hate the smell, it's like an old lady."

Dove then published the first 50 reviews with each poster's permission, word for word and unedited, identities protected through each Redditor's customised Snoovatar. Those comments became the campaign: guerrilla and digital out-of-home in New York, social content, influencer work, and testimonial-style films in which Redditors read their reviews aloud. A pop-up at New York's Flatiron Plaza on February 5–6, 2026 put real Reddit posts, free product and prizes on the street.

The name r/eal reviews borrowed Reddit's subreddit format, and the campaign's radical transparency paid off: Control Publicidad's coverage of the Cannes awards reported that the honesty doubled the treatment's sales in the US market. At Cannes Lions 2026 the work took six Lions — Gold in Social & Creator and Creative Strategy, Silver in Brand Experience & Activation, and Bronze in Social & Creator, Media and Creative Strategy.

Why it lands

  • Reddit was chosen for its reputation as the internet's most honest critic, so a passing grade there was worth more than any scripted endorsement.
  • Publishing the negatives made the positives believable: the brand's willingness to run "I hate the smell" out of home became the real proof of product confidence.
  • The reviews were not adapted into advertising — they were the advertising, verbatim, which made each comment feel like community testimony rather than a brand claim.
  • Anonymity via Snoovatars protected the reviewers while keeping the campaign unmistakably Reddit, so the platform's identity carried into every placement.

What it did

The campaign's verbatim negatives — like "I hate the smell, it's like an old lady" — sat beside the praise, and Spanish industry coverage of the awards reported the honesty doubled the treatment's US sales. At Cannes Lions 2026, r/eal Reviews won six Lions: Gold in Social & Creator and in Creative Strategy, Silver in Brand Experience & Activation, and Bronze in Social & Creator, Media and Creative Strategy.

What you can take

Don't buy praise — sponsor honesty: when a brand publishes its own negative reviews verbatim, the product's confidence becomes the message and the audience does the persuading.

Since then

Dove's r/eal Reviews ran through spring 2026 and became one of the most decorated campaigns of Cannes Lions 2026 with six awards, including Gold in Creative Strategy and in Social & Creator. Trade coverage framed it as a direct answer to the fake-review crisis in cosmetics, and the pop-up and out-of-home work made verbatim Reddit comments a mainstream advertising format. For DAVID, the campaign also anchored a broader shift in influencer marketing toward sponsoring honesty rather than praise, an idea the network repeated for other clients during the same festival week.
