Dove's anti-AI vow retrains Pinterest's beauty algorithm — Cannes Media Grand Prix

For Real Beauty's 20th year, Dove swore off AI-distorted women and made users' pins retrain Pinterest — 787M impressions, 2025 Cannes Media Grand Prix.

Dove (Unilever)

The ideaLet women define beauty in a tool whose pins retrain Pinterest's algorithm — so Dove's Real Beauty pledge changes what AI shows, not just what its ads say.substantial

What it had to solve

Generative AI, trained on internet images, was reproducing narrow beauty ideals: Dove's 2024 global study (33,000 people across 20 countries) found 1 in 3 women feel pressure to alter their appearance because of online beauty standards. For the 20th anniversary of Real Beauty, Dove needed to act on AI itself, not only talk about it.

How it works

For the 20th anniversary of its 'Campaign for Real Beauty', Dove confronted a new threat: generative AI, trained on the internet's existing images, was amplifying narrow beauty ideals. The brand's own research — 33,000 people across 20 countries — found one in three women felt pressured to alter their appearance because of what they saw online.

Dove's answer had two parts. First, a public vow never to use AI to create or distort women's images, announced with 'The Code', a film about the beauty ideals AI defaults to. Second, a fix rather than a protest: with Mindshare and Droga5, Dove built 'Real Beauty DNA' with Pinterest, where women chose images and traits that reflected their own definition of beauty, and their pins literally retrained the platform's search algorithm.

The results made the point that purpose can run through media infrastructure: the Pinterest homepage takeover delivered 29 million impressions with a 336% engagement lift, the campaign reached 27 million people on Pinterest and 787 million impressions overall, engagement among women ran 21.4% above platform benchmarks, and brand association with Real Beauty rose 2.9 points. In June 2025 the work won the Cannes Lions Media Grand Prix.

Why it lands

  • Dove attacked the cause — the algorithm — rather than only the symptom, so the campaign kept working after the ads ended.
  • The vow not to use AI on women's images gave the brand the standing to criticize AI without hypocrisy.
  • Pinterest's users became co-creators: each pin personalized a feed and simultaneously retrained the model, turning audience participation into infrastructure.
  • The 20th-anniversary framing gave the campaign stakes: the platform that fought 2004's airbrushing now takes on 2024's AI.

What it did

The homepage takeover alone delivered 29 million impressions and a 336% lift in engagement; the campaign reached 27 million people on Pinterest and 787 million impressions in total, with women's engagement 21.4% above Pinterest benchmarks and Real Beauty brand association up 2.9 points. It won the 2025 Cannes Lions Media Grand Prix.

What you can take

When a platform's algorithm becomes the problem, make the platform the medium: users' real choices retraining Pinterest changed the product itself — a pledge backed by engineering, not just ads.

Since then

The campaign became a new pillar of Dove's two-decade Real Beauty platform, which had already won Dove nearly two dozen Lions by 2025. The pledge and the Real Beauty Prompt Playbook — public tips for prompting AI toward inclusive imagery — outlived the media buy, and the Pinterest tool was held up in Cannes jury commentary as proof that brands could shape AI platforms instead of merely running ads on them. Competitors and platforms followed with their own responsible-AI messaging, making the algorithm itself the new front line for inclusive representation.
