The ideaBring the lost lyric sheet back as the product: a speaker whose translucent screen typesets each song's words live, with fonts and motion that follow the music's mood.substantial

What it had to solve

Streaming made music instantly available but pushed lyric booklets out of the experience; fewer people ever read the words they were listening to. SIX and Hakuhodo Products treated the loss of the lyric sheet as a design problem to solve with hardware and typography.

How it works

Streaming made music available anywhere but pushed the physical lyric booklet out of the experience — people increasingly listened without ever reading the words. SIX and Hakuhodo Products, the creative team behind the project, treated that loss as a design problem rather than an inevitability.

Their answer, launched in 2016 as the COTODAMA Lyric Speaker, was a full-range speaker with a translucent LCD screen on the front. Its Lyric Sync Technology analyses each song's tempo and mood, retrieves the lyrics from a database of roughly 2.4 million songs, and typesets them live — gentle ballads in calm serif lettering, up-tempo tracks in bolder gothic type with stronger motion.

It was the first IoT speaker with built-in lyric sync, and the idea travelled: SXSW 2015 named it Best Bootstrap Company, the ACC Tokyo Creativity Awards gave Lyric Sync Technology a 2018 Gold in its Creative Innovation section, and Abbey Road RED selected COTODAMA for Europe's leading music-tech incubator.

In 2018 COTODAMA launched Lyric Speaker Canvas, a slimmer model priced at ¥165,000 and sold through Tsutaya, Conran Shop and Yodobashi in Japan plus retailers in Europe and the US. The product turned a lost artefact — the lyric sheet — into the centerpiece of listening, and its engine later flowed into DJ software and live-stage visuals.

Why it lands

  • It attacked a real cultural loss — reading lyrics — instead of merely adding a screen to a speaker.
  • The motion typography made words emotional again: fonts and movement respond to the music, so the product performs the lyrics instead of just displaying them.
  • Shipping it as hardware gave the idea a shelf life and a price, letting people experience the concept every time they listened.
  • Partnerships with a large lyric database and later with Pioneer DJ showed the technology could live beyond the original device.

What it did

The world's first IoT speaker with built-in lyric sync; named Best Bootstrap Company at SXSW 2015; won ACC Tokyo Creativity Awards 2018 Gold in Creative Innovation (Product & Service); selected into Abbey Road RED; Canvas launched November 2018.

What you can take

When a format dies, don't mourn it — rebuild it as an experience: take the lyric sheet people stopped reading and make it the live, expressive centerpiece of listening.

Since then

COTODAMA grew into a company built on lyric culture — a record-player edition in 2018, limited collaborations, and later the COTODAMA SPEAKER covering 15+ million songs in 40+ languages. Lyric Sync Technology also became software: a rekordbox lyric add-on co-developed with Pioneer DJ and live-stage visuals. The ACC Gold placed the work inside Japan's mainstream advertising canon, and the speaker itself remains a reference for 'the interface is the idea' — a commodity category, speakers, differentiated entirely by how it makes content visible.
