Budweiser's WHTSPP Records leaks stars' numbers — demos arrive as voice notes

BudX Records printed the WhatsApp numbers of Colombia's top urban artists; unsigned musicians sent demos as voice notes and got real feedback.

The ideaTurn demo submission into a WhatsApp voice note: deliberately 'leak' the numbers of Colombia's most-listened urban stars so unsigned artists can message them directly.substantial

What it had to solve

Budweiser launched BudX Records in Colombia in 2021 to challenge the music industry's status quo and promote new urban talent, calling 1,200 emerging artists in its first year. In 2022 the goal grew to 8,000 and the label had to become credible — yet in Colombia, an independent artist usually only gets heard if they already know an industry influencer.

How it works

In Colombia, an unsigned urban artist is only heard if they already have contacts in the industry — a near-impossible door for newcomers and especially for musicians outside the big cities. Budweiser's BudX Records, created in 2021 to fight that status quo, needed to grow from 1,200 to 8,000 artists called in a single year while proving the label was real.

DAVID Bogotá's answer was to make the application process identical to how Colombians actually talk: WhatsApp. The campaign deliberately leaked the phone numbers of the country's most-listened urban artists — Ryan Castro, Farina, LosPetitFellas, Rap Bang Club and Yera Music — printing them across TV, billboards, bus stops, trucks, print, banners, parties and social media, and inviting emerging artists to send a demo as easily as a voice note.

The stars themselves answered, giving constructive feedback, listening to the demos and choosing favorites, which turned the 'leak' into an intimate artist-to-artist exchange. According to the agency, the campaign received more than 5,000 WhatsApp messages and 25,000 demos, five times the previous year, generated over 200 million impressions and lifted brand power by 14%, while discovering ten potential superstars and bringing one winner to record with his favorite artist's support.

WHTSPP Records won a Bronze Lion in Radio & Audio at Cannes 2022 — alongside a second Bronze in Mobile — and was recognized at El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2022, where the same work took two Silver and two Bronze Lions and was named the best idea of Colombia.

Why it lands

  • Leaking the numbers made the industry's closed door disappear: access was the product, and it felt like a secret rather than a campaign.
  • WhatsApp was where Colombians already communicated, with roughly 39 million monthly active users, so the format cost artists nothing to use.
  • The stars replying with feedback made the promise credible — the label was not just collecting demos but acting on them.
  • Putting phone numbers on billboards and buses turned a media buy into an event people talked about and shared.

What it did

The campaign drew more than 5,000 WhatsApp messages and 25,000 music demos — five times the previous year — with over 200 million impressions and a 14% rise in brand power, according to the agency. It discovered ten potential superstars and took one winner to record with the support of his favorite artist, and won a Bronze in Radio & Audio at Cannes Lions 2022 plus further Lions at El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2022.

What you can take

Put the opportunity where the audience already talks: replacing an application funnel with a direct voice note to a star made the barrier disappear — accessibility was the idea.

Since then

The 'leaked number' mechanic became BudX Records' signature for finding talent: the label framed its 2022 haul as the year the gap between newcomers and superstars closed to a single WhatsApp message, and the campaign collected further honours at El Ojo de Iberoamérica, where it was named Colombia's best idea and won Silvers in Digital & Social and Media plus Bronzes in Brand Experience and Radio & Audio.
