BBVA Mexico turns fraud warnings into a game show — '¿Es Fraude?' cuts losses $9M
TERAN TBWA made BBVA's anti-fraud education a 5-episode TV game show — same-quarter losses fell US$9M, Grand Ojo Eficacia 2024.
BBVA México
What it had to solve
Bank fraud kept climbing in Mexico — Condusef logged a 62% year-on-year rise in transfer fraud by May 2023 — yet standard security messaging was so conventional that people tuned it out. BBVA needed prevention that Mexicans would actually absorb.
How it works
In Mexico, bank fraud was climbing: by May 2023 the consumer-protection agency Condusef logged a 62% year-on-year rise in transfer fraud, and the country ranked among the world's ten worst for cybercrime. Yet the standard response — security warnings in conventional formats — was so easy to skim that people missed it. BBVA México needed prevention that Mexicans would actually absorb.
TERAN TBWA's answer was to stop warning and start playing: '¿Es Fraude?' fused financial education with entertainment in five 10-minute YouTube episodes hosted by Rodrigo Murray. Contestants of different ages face simulated scams — calls, SMS, emails, fake websites, even face-to-face fraud — and must tell real bank messages from fake ones to protect the $10,000 on screen; each slip lets a character called El Defraudador take a chunk of the money. Every episode ends with prevention tips, written with BBVA's security experts.
The format turned a dry topic into culture: '¿Es Fraude?' became a national catchphrase and, in BBVA's telling, the first question people ask before acting on any suspicious contact. Measured against the prior year, fraud losses in the same quarter fell by US$9 million. The campaign then travelled through the industry's effectiveness circuit, winning two Silvers at the 2024 Effie Awards México — in Positive Social Impact and Financial Services — and the Grand Ojo Eficacia at El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2024.
The transferable move was treating the audience as players, not readers: the show makes people rehearse the detection decision under game pressure, so the lesson lands in behaviour rather than in an inbox. And because the content was built with the bank's own anti-fraud and legal teams, it carried weight a general-entertainment production could not.
Why it lands
- It simulated the attack instead of describing it, so viewers rehearsed the detection decision under pressure.
- Edutainment gave a banking-security topic reach that conventional warnings could not get.
- The five episodes covered every common scam channel — calls, SMS, email, fake sites, face-to-face — not just one.
- The result was measurable and large: US$9 million in same-quarter loss reduction tied to the campaign.
- Two award systems (El Ojo, Effie México) validated it, proving the idea travelled beyond one jury.
What it did
'¿Es Fraude?' became a national catchphrase and the first step in prevention: fraud losses in the same quarter fell US$9 million versus the prior year. The show took the Grand Ojo Eficacia at El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2024 and two Silvers at the Effie Awards México 2024.
What you can take
When education is the product, make the lesson the entertainment: a game that simulates the attack teaches detection better than a warning, because viewers rehearse the decision instead of reading it.
Since then
The show launched on YouTube in November 2023 and ran five episodes; BBVA's CMO positioned it as an industry-wide prevention tool rather than a bank advertisement. In late 2024 it collected two Silvers at the Effie Awards México and then the Grand Ojo Eficacia at El Ojo de Iberoamérica, where the jury president called the win 'indisputable'. The phrase '¿Es Fraude?' outlived the series as a cultural shorthand for pausing before trusting any message, and the edutainment format became a template BBVA could reuse for other financial-education topics.
