adidas makes race number 321 a symbol — all six major marathons reserve it

adidas turns bib 321 (trisomy 21) into running's first iconic number for neurodivergent athletes — 252 races signed on, 278 runners ready.

The ideaMake '321' — trisomy 21 — running's first community number: the world's marathons reserve bib 321 for a qualifying neurodivergent athlete.substantial

What it had to solve

adidas had just sponsored Chris Nikic, the first athlete with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman and the brand's first globally sponsored athlete with Down syndrome. But when people with Down syndrome do not see themselves represented in sport, they cannot see what is possible for them — so the goal became a movement for the visibility of neurodivergent athletes in running, the world's most accessible sport.

How it works

Sport idolizes iconic numbers — Michael Jordan's 23, Messi's 10, Gretzky's 99 — but those numbers have only ever stood for athletes inside the mainstream. adidas saw that neurodivergent athletes were missing from that symbolic language entirely, even though running is the world's most accessible sport. The brand had a perfect protagonist: Chris Nikic, the first athlete with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman and adidas' first globally sponsored athlete with Down syndrome.

For World Down Syndrome Day, adidas and FCB Canada launched Runner 321. The idea was to give an entire community its own iconic number: 321, because 95% of people with Down syndrome have trisomy 21 — three copies of chromosome 21 — which is also why the day is 03/21. The campaign asked the world's major marathons to reserve bib 321 for a qualifying neurodivergent athlete, and armed other races with a landing page and a toolkit of instructions and social posts so they could join.

The idea spread through the events themselves: cheering sections at mile 3.21 of the NYC and Boston marathons, a Fifth Avenue adidas store takeover, and Chris handing his bib to the next Runner 321, Kayleigh Williamson. All six World Marathon Majors — Boston, New York, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Chicago — reserved the number, four despite rival sportswear sponsorship, and 252 races and 278+ athletes signed on. The campaign took Best of Creative Effectiveness at the 2024 One Show and a Grand Prix at the AToMiC awards.

Why it lands

  • A race number is a symbol every runner understands: giving the community '321' created recognition in a language sport already speaks.
  • The number did the storytelling — 321 means trisomy 21, so the symbol itself explained why it mattered without a single claim.
  • The mechanism was systemic rather than one-off: each major marathon that reserved bib 321 institutionalized the representation for future races.
  • Rivals could not buy the idea back: four of the six majors were sponsored by Nike, New Balance and Asics, yet still adopted adidas' number.
  • The film made the community the hero, so the campaign converted attention into participation — 252 races and 278+ athletes signed up.

What it did

All six World Marathon Majors — Boston, New York, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Chicago — reserved bib 321 for a neurodivergent athlete, four of them despite being sponsored by adidas rivals Nike, New Balance and Asics. According to the campaign's award entry, 252 races committed to adding a Runner 321, 278+ athletes signed up to be the next one, and the launch earned 59 placements for 268 million impressions including Forbes, The Boston Herald, Barstool Sports, Yahoo! and MSN Sports. It took Best of Creative Effectiveness at the 2024 One Show and a Grand Prix at the AToMiC awards.

What you can take

An iconic number is a transferable asset: by giving a community its own '23', adidas built a symbol that rival sponsorships could not buy and that races adopted themselves.

Since then

Runner 321 outgrew a single race: after Chris Nikic ran with the bib, he handed it to the next Runner 321, Kayleigh Williamson, making the number an inheritance rather than a one-day stunt. The campaign reported 252 races committed to adding a Runner 321 and 278+ athletes signed up to carry it, and the movement kept adding events. The work's effectiveness was recognized through 2024 — Best of Creative Effectiveness at the One Show, and a Grand Prix plus Golds at the AToMiC awards — cementing 321 alongside 23 and 10 as a number that stands for something beyond one athlete.
