Whisper rebuilds period education for girls who menstruate at 8 — Glass Grand Prix 2026

Accepts that Indian girls now menstruate at 8 and rebuilds education, school programmes and products around them — 8.2M girls educated, Spikes 2026 Glass GP.

Whisper (Procter & Gamble India)

The ideaAccept that girls now menstruate at 8 and rebuild the ecosystem for them: a jingle film that makes periods sound healthy, lessons for 8-year-olds, products made for them.substantial

What it had to solve

In India, girls are starting to menstruate as early as age 8, yet period education and products assume older teenagers — leaving up to 26 million girls at risk of dropping out of school from confusion, stigma and lack of support. Whisper's #KeepGirlsInSchool movement wanted to close the gap between when periods start and when girls are taught about them.

How it works

In India, girls are starting to menstruate as early as 8 years old, but period education and products have long been built for older teenagers. Whisper's research found that up to 26 million girls were at risk of dropping out of school without period education and access to products, with roughly one in five dropouts linked to that gap — so the brand faced a timing mismatch, not just a taboo.

Project Early Periods, created with Leo Burnett Mumbai, treated early menstruation as the new normal and rebuilt the ecosystem around the youngest girls. The launch film showed 8-year-olds who knew nothing about menstruation imagining wild causes for a friend's unexpected bleeding, then taught them with a catchy jingle — 'periods ka matlab healthy hai aap' (periods means you are healthy) — turning a frightening event into a reassuring one.

The idea then moved into every touchpoint that touches an 8-year-old: age-appropriate lessons were pushed into the more than 60,000 schools Whisper visits each year, parents and teachers received tools to start the conversation, and Whisper redesigned products so younger girls had something that fit both their bodies and their school bags.

The project educated 8.2 million girls — 1.64 times its target and nearly 39% of the vulnerable cohort — and helped prevent about one million girls from dropping out of school. At Spikes Asia 2026 it won the Glass: The Award for Change Grand Prix, the category that rewards work driving genuine change.

Why it lands

  • It reframed the problem: instead of telling girls to be ready for periods at 12, the campaign rebuilt the system for the reality that periods now start at 8.
  • The jingle made a frightening biological event sound healthy and normal in a language young children understand.
  • It worked across the whole ecosystem — film, classroom lessons, caregiver tools and product design — so the idea survived beyond the campaign.
  • Quantified school impact (8.2 million girls educated, about one million prevented from dropping out) turned purpose into measurable change.
  • It used the brand's existing 60,000-school education network as the distribution channel, making the intervention scalable.

What it did

The project educated 8.2 million girls — 1.64 times its target and nearly 39% of the vulnerable cohort — and helped prevent about one million girls from dropping out of school. It won the Glass: The Award for Change Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2026, where Leo Mumbai was named Creative Agency of the Year.

What you can take

When reality outruns a category's assumptions, rebuild the product, classroom and tools around the new user — one insight (periods at 8) became a platform spanning film, curriculum and packaging.

Since then

Project Early Periods ran under Whisper's long-running #KeepGirlsInSchool movement, which had already taught more than 100 million schoolgirls and mothers about periods. After the school-jingle launch in May 2024, the project won the Glass: The Award for Change Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2026 and was also shortlisted in Cannes Lions 2025's Health & Wellness category. Leo Burnett Mumbai's run of purpose-led work around the campaign helped it take both Creative Agency of the Year honours at Spikes Asia 2026.
