Whirlpool turns 'dancing' washers into discounts — Gran Effie México 2025
Whirlpool turned the viral 'dancing washing machine' malfunction into discounts: the wilder your machine dances, the bigger the discount code.
Whirlpool México · VML México
What it had to solve
After the post-pandemic slowdown in home appliances, Whirlpool needed to reconnect with younger Mexicans, including people buying their first machine, while the appliance category was stuck talking technical specs. Meanwhile, on TikTok, users were already filming their malfunctioning washing machines 'dancing' chaotically during the spin cycle.
How it works
A washing machine that malfunctions 'dances': it vibrates, hops and lurches through the spin cycle. On TikTok, users were already filming these dances for laughs, and Whirlpool México saw an opportunity to join the conversation instead of defending its machines.
With VML México, the brand launched Dancing Washers on 7 November 2024, ahead of Buen Fin, Mexico's Black Friday. On a digital platform, owners uploaded or recorded their machine's dance; an algorithm scored the movement, matched it to music at the right tempo, and issued a discount code — the bigger the dance, the bigger the benefit. The experience also routed users toward technical assistance and repurchase offers.
Creative chief Luis 'Madruga' Enriquez framed it as embracing a technical flaw rather than hiding it, turning the dance into a common language to activate repurchases through emotion, humour and technology. The campaign targeted younger Mexicans and first-time buyers after the post-pandemic appliance slump, a category that usually talks only in specifications.
Results were reported as 6,000+ user videos, a 10.4% TikTok engagement rate (580% above the brand's historical average), attribute lifts of 5–9% in recommendation, consideration and purchase intent, a 47% year-over-year sales increase during the key season against a 30% target, a 40% rise in technical-service interactions and a 136% gain in positive sentiment. The work won a Silver at the Gerety Awards 2025 and, at the Effie Awards México 2025, the Gran Effie plus Golds in E-commerce/Retail Media and Social Media and a Silver in Promotions, making VML México Agency of the Year.
Why it lands
- It borrowed an existing, authentic internet behaviour — users filming their dancing washers — instead of inventing a message and pushing it at people.
- The brand turned its technical authority into play: an algorithm read the machine's movement, so expertise became the engine of the joke.
- The bigger the malfunction, the bigger the reward inverted a customer complaint into an incentive to engage with the brand and its service network.
- It connected culture to commerce: a social meme became a discount code inside the brand's own platform, measurable in sales.
- Humour let Whirlpool talk to younger, first-time buyers about a category that usually competes on specifications.
What it did
The campaign generated over 6,000 user videos and a 10.4% TikTok engagement rate, 580% above Whirlpool's historical average, with recommendation, consideration and purchase intent up 5–9%. During the key season, washing-machine sales grew 47% year over year against a 30% target, technical-service interactions rose 40%, and positive sentiment jumped 136%.
What you can take
Embrace the flaw your audience is already laughing about: turn a product's embarrassment into shared language, and the joke becomes both proof of expertise and a purchase trigger.
Since then
Dancing Washers ran from November 2024 as Whirlpool's Buen Fin play and kept collecting recognition through 2025: a Silver at the Gerety Awards, and at the 26th Effie Awards México in October 2025 the Gran Effie — awarded for exceptional business results — plus two Golds and a Silver, alongside VML México being named Agency of the Year with seven metals. Industry coverage cited the campaign as a model for turning product flaws into e-commerce experiences, and Whirlpool brand leadership said it would keep the 'ideas born where consumers live' approach that produced it.
