Tim Hortons photographs its ads inside Canada's record snow so a red cup proves 'Always'
In Canada's snowiest winter since 2007, GUT shot the campaign in real storms: only a red Tims cup shows through the snow under the word 'Always'.
Tim Hortons
What it had to solve
One of the snowiest winters Canada had seen since 2007 — nearly 200 centimetres in places — erased most outdoor advertising into white noise, yet Canadians kept queueing for Tim Hortons through it. The brand's 'Always Yours' platform needed work that turned that shared national experience into brand truth.
How it works
During one of the snowiest winters Canada had seen since 2007 — nearly 200 centimetres in places — most outdoor advertising disappeared under white, while Canadians kept queueing for Tim Hortons anyway.
GUT Toronto's Blizzard campaign made that weather the medium. Photographed in real snowstorms, each image shows a single red Tims cup emerging from the whiteness with the caption 'Always', an echo of the brand platform 'Always Yours'; placements ran across Toronto's subway, bus stops, billboards and social media, timed to actual storms.
The response was recognition rather than reach metrics: Canadians commented again and again that they felt reflected, and the trade singled out the campaign's restraint in an era of loud, synthetic advertising.
At Cannes Lions 2026 the work won a Silver Lion for GUT Toronto and Tim Hortons, confirming that a brand confident enough to show almost nothing could still be unmistakably itself.
Why it lands
- The snow was a shared national experience, so the work felt like conversation rather than interruption.
- Shooting in real storms makes the claim — Tims is always there — visibly true in the very media where it appears.
- Minimal branding is the risk that pays: one red cup relies on decades of recognition instead of repeating the logo.
- Weather-reactive production let each ad land during the actual storm it depicted.
What it did
Canadians read the work as recognition rather than advertising — GUT's chief creative officer said social commenters repeatedly described feeling reflected — and the trade praised its restraint in an era of loud, synthetic ads. At Cannes Lions 2026 it won a Silver Lion for GUT Toronto and Tim Hortons. No sales figures were published.
What you can take
When a national moment is already loud, go quiet: real weather plus one iconic red cup makes the environment deliver the brand promise — no slogan needs to shout.
Since then
Blizzard ran through one of Canada's hardest winters and became the campaign GUT's leadership pointed to when arguing for restraint: it won a Silver Lion at Cannes Lions 2026 and kept the 'Always Yours' platform in the national conversation into the spring. Tim Hortons continued the platform after the snow cleared. No sales or market-share figures were released, so the documented outcome is cultural recognition and industry validation rather than a business number.
