Swiggy Instamart prints mangoes in photochromatic ink — the ad ripens in sunlight

A newspaper ad whose illustrated mangoes turn green to gold in sunlight, making Instamart's fresh-in-10-minutes promise visible on the page — Abby 2026 Bronze.

What it had to solve

Every Indian summer, mango season floods newspapers with ads while quick-commerce brands fight over freshness and speed. Instamart needed its 'peak-season produce in under 10 minutes' promise to feel tangible inside a static full-page print ad.

How it works

Mango season is an emotional moment in India — a summer fruit tied to childhood memories — and a crowded one for advertisers. For a quick-commerce brand, the freshness and speed of delivery are the whole product story, yet a printed page cannot show a mango being picked or delivered in minutes.

Swiggy Instamart answered with a full-page newspaper ad printed in photochromatic ink. The scene showed children playing beneath a mango tree; when the page was held in sunlight, the ink reacted to UV light and the illustrated mangoes visibly turned from green to golden — the ad ripened in the reader's hands.

Conceptualised in-house with media handled by Havas Media India, the campaign was a deliberate successor to Instamart's earlier mango-scented print ad, extending a sensory series around the same fruit. It reinforced the brand's promise of delivering peak-season produce in under 10 minutes and was billed as a first-of-its-kind use of the technique in print media.

The work earned wide trade coverage and, in May 2026, a Bronze in Innovative Use of Print at the Abby Media Awards at Goafest.

Why it lands

  • It made the medium do the work: the ad changes only when a reader holds it in sunlight, turning a static print buy into a small interactive event.
  • The mechanism mirrored the brand promise — fresh mangoes delivered fast — instead of merely claiming it.
  • It built on the emotional core of mango season, picturing the pre-internet childhood summers that the fruit evokes for Indian consumers.
  • It invested in a printing technique rather than a bigger media budget, and repeated the trick across years as a sensory print series.

What it did

Billed as a first-of-its-kind in print media, the ad turned a delivery promise into a transformation readers could watch happen; it later won Bronze in Innovative Use of Print at the Abby 2026 Media Awards.

What you can take

When your product's core promise is freshness, let the ad itself prove it: an image that changes with sunlight demonstrates speed and freshness more convincingly than any claim in copy.

Since then

The photochromatic ad extended the sensory series Instamart began with its 2024 mango-scented front-page ad, and the brand framed both as proof that quick commerce can still produce magazine-style print moments. Coverage focused on the rarity of the technique and the 10-minute freshness promise behind it. At Goafest's Abby Awards in May 2026, the work took Bronze in Innovative Use of Print, filed under media innovation by Havas Media India.
