What it had to solve
China Oriental Performing Arts Group and the Palace Museum wanted to stage A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, the 1113 blue-green landscape painted by 18-year-old Wang Ximeng, without faking a biography — the painter left almost no records.
The idea
Dancers become the scroll's blue-green mountains — hair as rocks, sleeves as waterfalls, slow turns as ridgelines — around a time-slipping 'scroll unroller'.
How it works
The team spent 20 months studying Song poetry and painting, and invited national heritage inheritors of mineral pigments, Hui ink, Xuan brushes and silk to coach the cast in the rehearsal hall. The drama follows a modern researcher, the 'scroll unroller', through chapters named for the crafts behind the painting; the lead dancer embodies the blue-green pigment itself.
What it did
Fifty-plus shows across 18 cities sold out before any gala; after the 2022 Spring Festival Gala segment aired, 'beautiful, it made me cry' trended, 'Qing Lü's waist' became a meme, and a second tour was booked for 120-plus shows across roughly 40 cities. A film version opened China's National Day window on 1 October 2024.
Background
A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains is a national treasure: an 11.9-metre blue-green landscape painted in 1113 by Wang Ximeng, who was 18 and left almost no biographical record. China Oriental Performing Arts Group and the Palace Museum commissioned a stage adaptation; choreographers Zhou Liya and Han Zhen spent nearly 20 months researching the scroll, Song poetry and painting before the premiere in August 2021 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts.
The creative answer to the missing biography was to make devotion the subject. A modern Palace Museum researcher — the 'scroll unroller' — slips into the painter's mind through chapters named for the crafts that produced the painting: unrolling, asking the seal, singing the silk, seeking the stone, practising the brush, quenching the ink, entering the painting. The lead dancer, Meng Qingyang, plays 'Qing Lü' — the blue-green pigment — with hair styled like mountain rocks, hanging sleeves like waterfalls, and slow group turns that read as moving ridgelines.
The tour sold out quietly: 50-plus performances in 18 cities with word-of-mouth acclaim. Then the 2022 Spring Festival Gala broadcast a six-minute excerpt, and the country saw it at once — 'it made me cry' flooded feeds, and dancers' imitation of mountains, including the deep backward 'Qing Lü waist', became a national meme and a fitness challenge.
Why it lands
It staged the painting's material craft, not just its image — chapters follow pigment, silk, ink and brush, so each scene teaches how the scroll physically came to exist.
The 'scroll unroller' gives modern viewers a protagonist to stand inside the artwork, solving the missing-biography problem without inventing fake drama.
Choreographing the landscape itself — bodies as mountains — produced images that survive a six-minute gala cut and translate into stills and memes.
Heritage inheritors in the rehearsal room made the stagecraft defensible; authenticity kept critics and connoisseurs on side while the mass audience swooned.
What you can take
Old art needs a translation layer, not a costume. Making the audience's own representative — a researcher who studies the scroll — the entry point turns a museum object into shared live experience.
Since then
A second national tour launched in March 2022, scheduled for 120-plus performances across some 40 cities, and the production kept iterating on tour feedback — choreographer Zhou Liya's line became its motto: 'there is no final version, only the best version.' The gala excerpt turned 'Qing Lü' into shorthand for a broader guochao wave of Song-aesthetics design. Three years on, the team brought the work to cinema: a film version of the dance drama opened nationwide on 1 October 2024, joining the National Day release window.
