Piramal Finance lends on 'neeyat' not paperwork — and takes a 2025 Global Grand Effie
Cash earners in small-town India have no credit score; Piramal Finance's 'neeyat over paper' platform rebuilt that judgment — Global Grand Effie 2025.

What it had to solve
Across India's Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, millions of small businesses and households earn legitimate income in cash but have no payslips, tax filings or repayment history, so formal lenders treat them as uncreditworthy regardless of their actual record. Piramal Finance — the lending arm of Piramal Enterprises — launched its first brand campaign in January 2023, with The Womb, to take on exactly that bias.
How it works
In India's Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, millions of small businesses and households earn legitimate income in cash. They have no payslips, tax filings or repayment history, so formal lenders treat them as uncreditworthy whatever their actual record — a systemic bias that Piramal Finance, the lending arm of Piramal Enterprises, decided to attack.
Piramal Finance's first brand campaign, launched in January 2023 with The Womb, was titled 'Hum Kagaz Se Zyaada Neeyat Dekhte Hain' — 'we look at neeyat (intent) more than paper'. Two opening films followed real families hitting loan roadblocks, shot in authentic small-town lives rather than the aspirational white-collar settings of Indian loan advertising, and the lender promised to weigh intent and integrity alongside documents when judging borrowers.
The platform ran in chapters. Later films told the stories of a mill owner expanding, a father completing his family home, and a bakery owner rebuilding with his daughter; the December 2025 chapter was The Womb's third year on the idea. Each wave was promoted across TV, digital, OTT and Piramal Finance's own branches, keeping one belief — character counts as much as documentation — at the center of a growing retail loan book.
Entered for effectiveness as 'NEEYAT: India's Real Credit Score', the work won the Global Grand Effie in Positive Change – Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the 2025 Global Best of the Best Awards, announced April 30, 2026. It was one of just 11 Global Grand winners chosen from 47 contenders across 130 markets, alongside ESAF Small Finance Bank's Grand Effie for 'Saving Her Savings'.
Why it lands
- The brand idea matched the lending reality: banks said documents mattered, and Piramal's own credit decisions actually weighed intent, so advertising never outran the product.
- Films starred real small-town borrowers instead of loan-fantasy families, letting the audience that had been excluded see itself as the bank's hero.
- Running one belief in chapters for three years compounded familiarity instead of restarting the story each season.
- The name itself — neeyat — carried the argument: a word for honest intention that paperwork cannot capture became the credit score India's cash economy deserved.
What it did
Entered for effectiveness as 'NEEYAT: India's Real Credit Score', the work won the Global Grand Effie in Positive Change – Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the 2025 Global Best of the Best Awards, announced on April 30, 2026 — one of just 11 winners chosen from 47 contenders across 130 markets. By late 2025 retail loans made up over 80% of Piramal Finance's ₹90,000+ crore AUM, served through more than 500 branches to over 5 million customers in Tier 2–3 and semi-urban towns.
What you can take
When the system can't see your market, don't beg for a document it won't have — build the brand around the quality the system ignores and prove that judgment works.
Since then
The 2025 Global Grand Effie crowned a platform Effie had already cleared at national level: Best of the Best entries must first win a Gold or Grand Effie at home, and the shortlist drew from 130 markets. Piramal Finance kept extending 'Neeyat' — a third chapter in December 2025, a stock-exchange listing, and a stated target of ₹1.5 lakh crore in AUM by FY28 — turning a tagline about trust into the story of a lender growing inside middle India.
