O2's AI granny Daisy wastes scammers' time — Eurobest 2025 Digital Craft Grand Prix
O2 built a lifelike AI granny that answers scam calls and keeps fraudsters talking 40+ minutes, turning the calls into viral content.
O2 (Virgin Media O2)
What it had to solve
O2's research found 71% of Brits would like to get their own back against scammers, but 53% wouldn't bait them because it would waste their own time, and one in five Brits faces a fraud attempt every week. The telecom needed an anti-fraud idea that also made headlines.
How it works
O2's research found that 71% of Brits would like to get their own back against scammers, but 53% said they wouldn't bait them because it would waste their own time. One in five Brits faces a fraud attempt every week. So the mobile operator built the one thing fraudsters hate most: a granny with all the time in the world.
Daisy, unveiled in November 2024, is a working conversational AI that answers calls from fraudsters in real time. Speech recognition transcribes the caller, a custom LLM with a 'personality' layer decides the reply, and text-to-speech speaks it back instantly. She was voiced like a real VCCP employee's grandmother, trained with the help of scambaiter Jim Browning, and her number was seeded onto scammer call lists, so the fraudsters ring her themselves.
Daisy stalls callers with family stories, knitting talk, a lost cat and made-up bank details — some calls ran past 40 minutes. Every call was recorded, and the most frustrating conversations became the hero film and social clips. Within months she had taken more than 1,000 scam calls; the campaign earned over 1,800 press pieces, more than a billion earned impressions and a million organic YouTube views.
Why it lands
- Daisy is a real working product, not a slogan: every minute she talks to a fraudster is time that criminal cannot spend on a real victim.
- Giving the AI a grandmother persona weaponised scammers' own bias against older people — they assumed an easy target and stayed on the line.
- The recordings were the campaign: real, uncut, funny proof made the work shareable without a big paid-media spend.
- It reframed a telecom's fraud defence as a hero story, earning coverage and trust that a traditional safety warning could not.
What it did
Daisy took 1,000+ scam calls, some lasting over 40 minutes; the campaign earned 1,800+ press pieces, over 1 billion earned impressions and 1 million organic YouTube views, and won the Eurobest 2025 Digital Craft Grand Prix plus a Cannes Lions PR Gold.
What you can take
Give a functional product a persona and let its output be the media: every minute Daisy talked was fraud prevention, and the funniest calls became the campaign's films.
Since then
Daisy launched as part of O2's 'Swerve the Scammers' programme, alongside new AI spam-blocking tools and free caller ID for customers, and her recordings continued to fuel social content as she took more than 1,000 calls. The work won the Eurobest 2025 Digital Craft Grand Prix, a Cannes Lions 2025 Gold in PR plus a Silver, and a 2025 Gold Effie in Europe; PRWeek recorded 17% public recall (11.4 million UK adults). O2 folded the lessons into its wider fraud prevention and reporting services, and Daisy became one of the most talked-about campaigns of 2024.
