Nutter Butter's absurd TikTok Nutterverse revives a forgotten cookie on a $0 media budget

A 55-year-old cookie with no ad budget built an absurdist TikTok universe with fan-written lore — 3.3B impressions, two Cannes Golds.

What it had to solve

Nutter Butter, a 55-year-old peanut-butter sandwich cookie, hadn't advertised in over a decade; sales were dwindling, retailers were dropping it and a new generation didn't know it existed. Mondelez challenged Dentsu Creative New York to make it culturally relevant to Gen Z with essentially zero media budget.

How it works

Nutter Butter, the 55-year-old peanut-butter sandwich cookie, had a major relevancy problem: it hadn't advertised in over a decade, sales were dwindling, retailers were pushing it to the back of shelves, and Gen Z had no idea it existed. Mondelez gave Dentsu Creative New York a very modest budget — effectively zero paid media — and asked it to reintroduce the brand to a generation that had moved on.

Dentsu's answer was the Nutterverse: an ever-expanding TikTok universe of absurdist, analog-horror-inspired content. Lo-fi videos with distorted audio, recurring characters like Aidan and Nadia (anagrams), and cryptic easter eggs drew viewers into an ongoing mystery. The team used social listening to turn fan comments, predictions and conspiracy theories into the next content prompt, even making a super-commenter named Aidan an official character. Crucially, every surreal video still featured the cookie itself.

The breakout moment came in September 2024, when TikTok creator Cassie Fitzwater's video asking 'Nutter Butter, are you okay?' was viewed more than 2.9 million times; the brand responded in-character ('Depend. Yes. Yes. Yes.'). Over the next weeks Nutter Butter dominated feeds, and the account gained 768K+ new followers. The campaign earned 177 media placements, 3.3B+ impressions, 249M+ earned views, 20K+ earned posts and 15M+ engagements, all with $0 media spend, while Gen Z/Y household penetration rose +16.5%.

At Cannes Lions 2025 the work won two Gold Lions — Breakthrough on a Budget in Social & Creator and Content Creation & Production in PR — plus a One Show Gold Pencil. The Nutterverse became the reference case for reviving a forgotten brand by behaving like a fandom rather than a broadcaster.

Why it lands

  • The zero-budget constraint became creative freedom: with no media money and no brand guidelines to obey, Dentsu could build an entirely new brand world instead of buying attention.
  • The audience co-wrote the campaign — comments, conspiracies and a real super-commenter became canon, so the community stayed invested in what happened next.
  • Every absurd post was still a product shot, so the weirdness built the brand rather than replacing it.
  • It treated TikTok as an experimental fandom playground — stitching, dueting, easter eggs and FOMO — instead of a broadcast channel for polished ads.

What it did

TikTok followers grew by 768K+ (from roughly 400K), and the campaign earned 177 media placements, 3.3B+ impressions, 249M+ earned views, 20K+ earned posts and 15M+ engagements — all with $0 media spend. Household penetration among Gen Z/Y grew +16.5%, and the work won two Cannes Lions 2025 Golds (Social & Creator, PR) plus a One Show Gold.

What you can take

When a brand can't outspend, out-weird: hand the story to the audience, keep every post anchored to the product, and let obsession do the media buying.

Since then

The Nutterverse kept expanding after the viral spike, with follower counts climbing past two million and other Mondelez brands joining the bit in comments. The campaign reshaped how marketers talk about organic social: trade coverage repeatedly cites it as proof that a forgotten brand can be rebuilt without paid media, and its Cannes 2025 double Gold cemented it as the benchmark for 'feed the weird' community-led content.
