Mercado Livre mows Pacaembu's pitch into a giant barcode so live TV becomes a coupon

A 104-metre barcode mowed into a football pitch lets fans scan their TVs for 25% off — Cannes 2026 Outdoor Grand Prix.

What it had to solve

Mercado Livre, Brazil's biggest e-commerce marketplace, bought the naming rights to São Paulo's iconic Pacaembu Stadium. But inside stadiums, traditional sponsor boards are increasingly ignored by fans watching the broadcast — so a naming-rights presence alone meant little.

How it works

Mercado Livre, Brazil's dominant e-commerce marketplace, bought the naming rights to Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, one of the country's most iconic football venues. The problem: inside stadiums, traditional sponsor boards are increasingly ignored by fans who watch the broadcast, so a naming-rights deal risked being just another sign. GUT São Paulo's answer treated the pitch itself as media.

On 5 July 2025, during a commemorative veterans match re-enacting Corinthians vs Boca Juniors, the Pacaembu lawn was mowed in striped patterns forming a 104-metre barcode. Broadcast on TV, Disney+ and YouTube, the code was engineered to stay readable even when only partially visible or filmed from awkward camera angles. Fans in the stadium pointed their phones at the field, and viewers at home photographed their TV screens — an AI algorithm recognized the pattern and released a coupon.

The activation, tied to Mercado Livre's '7.7 Descontaço' sale, unlocked 25% discounts. In the end 53,000 coupons were redeemed, sessions rose 7% during the campaign, and the activation generated R$1.7 million in sales. The game coverage itself became the coupon: attention that sponsors usually rent became a transactional moment inside the broadcast.

At Cannes Lions 2026, 'Field Barcode' won the Outdoor Grand Prix and a Bronze in the same category — the fourth Grand Prix for the GUT–Mercado Livre partnership, after 'Parada no Feed' (2021), 'Handshake Hunt' (2024) and 'Call of Discounts' (2025). Outdoor jury president Aaron Starkman called it work with the quality of the 'inevitable' — the kind that makes you think only that brand could have done it.

Why it lands

  • It turns a passive sponsorship asset — the pitch — into an active performance channel, so the brand's biggest media moment also becomes a storefront.
  • The medium is the insight: instead of interrupting the match, the campaign embeds commerce into the game itself, so the broadcast becomes the coupon.
  • Technical craft made the idea real: grass-cutting patterns engineered to survive camera angles, partial framing and broadcast distortion — an execution most agencies would not attempt.
  • The naming-rights deal gave the idea inevitability: only Mercado Livre, owner of the arena's name, could claim the pitch as its own media.

What it did

53,000 coupons were redeemed, sessions rose 7%, and the activation generated R$1.7 million in sales (the official entry reports US$1.78 million). It won the Cannes Lions 2026 Outdoor Grand Prix plus a Bronze — the fourth Cannes Grand Prix for the GUT–Mercado Livre partnership.

What you can take

Don't add another surface to an ignored medium — become the medium: mowing the pitch into a barcode made the most-watched element of the match a storefront, and the broadcast the coupon.

Since then

The campaign became the reference case for 'broadcast as canvas' — turning live coverage into a transactional medium without touching the physical match. It was Brazil's first Grand Prix of Cannes 2026 and the fourth for the GUT–Mercado Livre duo, which Brazilian trade press now call the most decorated agency–client partnership in the country's history. For Mercado Livre, the pitch barcode did what naming rights alone could not: it made a 90-minute broadcast a measurable sales channel, with 53,000 coupons redeemed, a 7% lift in sessions and R$1.7 million in sales.
