Mengniu (蒙牛) turns Messi's stumbles into the 2018 World Cup's Chinese catchphrase

Mengniu (蒙牛) signed Messi with '我不是天生强大,我只是天生要强'; when Argentina's results followed the ad script, its self-deprecating Weibo made 天生要强 a national meme.

What it had to solve

China's Mengniu had just become an official global partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and signed Lionel Messi as its spokesperson. The campaign needed a message that could survive a month of live football, where nobody controls the results.

How it works

China's Mengniu had just become an official global partner of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and signed Lionel Messi as its spokesperson, betting a 20-year-old dairy brand with RMB 60.16 billion in 2017 revenue on a month of football it could not control.

Its new proposition was '自然力量,天生要强' (natural power, born to be strong), and an April 19, 2018 film had Messi narrate his misses and falls before rising — '我不是天生强大,我只是天生要强' (I'm not born strong, I'm just born determined). The Chinese slogan ran on stadium LED boards, 161 products switched to World Cup packaging, and a scan-for-red-envelope mini program with card games and score predictions put the campaign on every pack.

The creative gamble was to treat the real tournament as part of the story: after Argentina drew Iceland and fans noticed the film seemed to script the team's arc — even the comeback against Nigeria — Mengniu's Weibo account answered mockery with self-deprecation and 'admitted' to being the mysterious force behind the World Cup. By the quarter-finals the #天生要强# topic had over 3.3 billion reads, the mini program drew over 260 million participations, and 88 selected Chinese children walked out before eight official matches.

Why it lands

  • The promise was about overcoming setbacks, not winning, so Argentina's stumble could not break it — losing was already in the script.
  • When fans found the pre-made film seemed to predict real results, the Weibo team answered with self-deprecation instead of defence, turning mockery into a running national joke.
  • The phrase 要强 named both the brand and the mood of a country rooting for comebacks, so people adopted it — even exam-season encouragement borrowed the '要强体'.
  • Every pack carried the campaign: 100%-win red envelopes and card games made the World Cup buzz land in the dairy aisle, not just on screens.

What it did

When Argentina's real results seemed to follow the film's script, Mengniu's Weibo team answered mockery with self-deprecating posts and 'admitted' to being the mysterious force behind the tournament. By the quarter-finals the #天生要强# topic had over 3.3 billion reads, the mini program drew more than 260 million participations, and after the tournament Mengniu reported brand power up 11.4%, brand liking up 22% and purchase intent up 20%.

What you can take

Build the story around struggle rather than victory, and when reality starts following your script, join the joke: self-deprecation turned fan mockery into a national meme.

Since then

Argentina exited in the round of 16, but the campaign already had its own momentum: the #天生要强# topic passed 3.3 billion reads before the quarter-finals, the mini program recorded more than 260 million participations, on-pack scans exceeded 100 million, and 88 Chinese children had appeared before eight World Cup matches. '天生要强' became a catchphrase of the year, with the '要强体' reportedly used by People's Daily to encourage exam students, and after the tournament Mengniu reported brand power up 11.4%, brand liking up 22% and purchase intent up 20%.
