What it had to solve

McDonald's is already Dubai's late-night stop after events, but the chain had no claim on nights out that start at an expensive restaurant. The brief was to own the moment fine dining leaves an empty wallet and an empty stomach.

How it works

Dubai's late-night McDonald's crowd already treated the chain as the last stop after events, but the brand had no stake in the most expensive part of a night out: fine dining. FP7 McCann's insight was the shared ritual of walking out of a tasting-menu restaurant — an empty wallet and an empty stomach — and heading straight to McDonald's for real food.

The answer, 'After-Dinner Dinner', made the fancy receipt itself the coupon. Diners who presented any same-night fine-dining bill of AED 500 or more at a McDonald's counter received up to two free Regular Extra Value Meals, valid 9pm–4am. A campaign film mocked tiny, overpriced tasting portions with fake bad reviews and gold lettering, while OOH posters and geotargeted offers pointed night-out crowds to the nearest store.

The mechanics turned an insult into a welcome: the more expensive and unsatisfying the first dinner, the better the second deal. Soft-launched at three Jumeirah outlets chosen for their late-night traffic, the promotion scaled to every McDonald's UAE restaurant from 15 May to 11 June 2024, then expanded to Santo Domingo. The campaign's own award entry reports a 35% footfall surge on weekends between 9pm and 3am, and it won Loeries 2024 Silver in Data-Driven Campaign and Bronze in PR.

Why it lands

  • The fine-dining receipt was both the targeting mechanism and the creative hook — customers brought the proof of the problem themselves.
  • It inverted the competitive dynamic: McDonald's built its pitch on the rival's failure, and the bigger the fancy bill, the sweeter the free meal felt.
  • The 9pm–4am window attacked a real unmet need — late-night hunger after tiny portions — at the moment McDonald's already served as a destination.
  • A three-outlet soft launch and geotargeted offers let the team test cheaply before scaling nationwide and into another market.
  • The humour — fake 'bad reviews' and CCTV-style footage of dressed-up customers ordering at the counter — made a discount feel like a running joke, not a price cut.

What it did

The offer scaled from three Dubai outlets to all McDonald's UAE restaurants, then expanded to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The campaign's award entry reports a 35% footfall surge on weekends between 9pm and 3am, and it won Loeries 2024 Silver in Data-Driven Campaign plus Bronze in PR.

What you can take

The rival's artifact can be your targeting data: let customers bring the receipt that proves the problem, and the deal writes its own story.

Since then

After the soft launch at three Jumeirah branches, McDonald's UAE rolled the offer out to all its restaurants for 15 May–11 June 2024, and FP7 McCann then expanded the idea to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The campaign collected Loeries 2024 Silver (Digital – Data Driven Campaign) and Bronze (PR & Media Communication Campaign), and it was a One Show 2025 finalist in Commerce. Its reported late-night footfall lift became a case-study staple for turning a night-out ritual into a redeemable brand moment.
