Mastercard casts Lady Gaga's fans to reshoot her 'Abracadabra' video
Mastercard turned Lady Gaga's music video into a global fan casting call — 32 fans starred in the Fan Edit, which drew 1.4B views and a +29% Gen Z lift.
Mastercard
What it had to solve
Mastercard wanted its Priceless platform to mean something to Gen Z, a generation that treats culture as something to join rather than watch. So when Lady Gaga released her single Abracadabra, McCann XBC proposed turning the launch into the biggest casting call of the year instead of another celebrity endorsement.
How it works
Mastercard wanted its Priceless platform to mean something to Gen Z, a generation that treats culture as something to join rather than watch. So when Lady Gaga released her single Abracadabra, McCann XBC proposed turning the launch into the biggest casting call of the year instead of another celebrity endorsement.
Fans around the world were invited to film themselves performing the choreography, with tutorials from choreographer Parris Goebel and viral dance creators to get them started. From thousands of auditions, 32 Little Monsters were flown to Los Angeles, trained by Goebel and styled in iconic pieces from Gaga's own wardrobe archive for a high-production Fan Edit of the video, which premiered on 29 March 2025.
The idea ran on participation: auditions spiked through a sub-trend of fans dancing in grocery-store aisles, the Fan Edit itself became the proof that fans could stand in for the star, and Mastercard capped the moment with Club MAYHEM, a Los Angeles party where Gaga performed alongside the winners.
The campaign generated over 1.4 billion video views, reached two-thirds of TikTok users within 48 hours, tripled Mastercard's social following and became the platform's top branded hashtag of 2025. It delivered a +29% brand-lift among Gen Z — the largest Gen Z opinion uplift Mastercard had ever recorded — and picked up a Cannes Lions 2025 Gold for Fan Engagement plus a 2026 Effie US Gold in Engaged Community.
Why it lands
- Gen Z does not watch culture, it performs it, so a casting call matched how the audience already behaved better than any broadcast ad.
- Real stakes made participation meaningful: thirty-two fans won costumes, a choreographer and the star's own crew, so the promise of being featured was credible.
- Letting Lady Gaga's own archive and team dress the winners gave the Fan Edit production values that made fans look like equals, not props.
- Every layer — auditions, tutorials, the Fan Edit, the afterparty — produced content fans wanted to make and share, so earned media did most of the work.
What it did
The campaign generated over 1.4 billion video views, reached two-thirds of TikTok users within 48 hours, tripled Mastercard's social following and became the platform's top branded hashtag of 2025. It delivered a +29% brand-lift among Gen Z — the largest Gen Z opinion uplift Mastercard had ever recorded — and picked up a Cannes Lions 2025 Gold for Fan Engagement plus a 2026 Effie US Gold in Engaged Community.
What you can take
Give the audience the lead role: when a brand hands over its stage to fans, the campaign stops being an ad and becomes an experience fans make and share themselves.
Since then
The Fan Edit premiered on 29 March 2025 and the campaign ran through the year: auditions, the video and Club MAYHEM kept generating organic content, and the results survived as benchmarks — over 1.4 billion views, the top branded hashtag on TikTok for 2025, a 215% jump in Mastercard's TikTok following and the biggest Gen Z brand-lift the company had recorded. Award shows followed in both effectiveness and craft: a Cannes Lions 2025 Gold in Fan Engagement with a Bronze in Social & Creator, and a Gold Effie in Engaged Community at the 2026 Effie Awards US.
