Li-Ning 'Wudao' at NYFW, market cap up HK$2.7B
In Feb 2018, Li-Ning became first Chinese sports brand at NYFW with 'Wudao'; runway styles ranked top three.
Li-Ning (李宁)
What it had to solve
From 2012 to 2014, Li-Ning (李宁) accumulated losses of over RMB 3.1 billion, many stores closed, and the brand looked outdated and tacky to young consumers. The company needed an event that would make young people see 'Li-Ning' (李宁) again, and in 2018 New York Fashion Week invited Chinese brands as a group for the first time under the name 'China Day' (中国日), giving it an international stage.
How it works
On February 7, 2018, Li-Ning (李宁) appeared at the New York Fashion Week 2018 Fall/Winter runway under the 'Wudao' (悟道) theme, becoming the first Chinese sports brand to take the stage. On the runway were Chinese-character logos, founder's old-photo prints, a replica of the VICTOR001 Olympic award uniform, and traditional Suzhou embroidery (苏绣)—mixing 1990s retro, streetwear techwear, and futurism—and social media was flooded right after the show.
This show happened at the moment Li-Ning (李宁) most needed a turnaround: from 2012 to 2014, the company accumulated losses of over RMB 3.1 billion, many stores closed, and the brand looked both tacky and outdated to young consumers. That year, New York Fashion Week invited Chinese brand groups to appear under the name 'China Day' (中国日) for the first time, and Li-Ning (李宁) appeared together with Peacebird (太平鸟), Chen Peng (陈鹏), and CLOT, handing the runway styles to Tmall (天猫) for simultaneous sale in the official flagship store.
The effect was immediate: after the show, runway-style sales ranked among the top three in the sports category that day; more than 1,000 pairs of the same runway shoes and T-shirts sold out quickly; a RMB 699 sweatshirt was marked up to RMB 999; within one month, the share price rose from HK$6.04 to HK$7.29, and market cap increased by HK$2.725 billion. Founder Li Ning (李宁) wrote on Weibo (微博), 'China Li-Ning (中国李宁), please give us your guidance,' and the comments were flooded with purchase requests; guochao (国潮) thereafter became the engine of Li-Ning's (李宁) recovery.
Why it lands
- Use an international top-tier stage to create contrast: a tacky domestic product became a trend event overnight.
- Translate the brand's old assets (Chinese characters, Olympic memories, old photos) into a design language young people would buy.
- Synchronize the runway and e-commerce, turning attention into sales on the spot and forming quantifiable proof.
- The timing was right: New York Fashion Week set up 'China Day' (中国日) for the first time, and Chinese consumers were eager for domestic-brand confidence.
- Founder Li Ning (李宁) himself appeared on camera and spoke, layering sentiment and newsworthiness and amplifying dissemination.
What it did
After the show, runway-style sales ranked among the top three in the sports category that day; more than 1,000 pairs of the same runway shoes and T-shirts sold out quickly; a RMB 699 sweatshirt was marked up to RMB 999; Weibo (微博) and WeChat (微信) were flooded. Within one month, the share price rose from HK$6.04 to HK$7.29, market cap increased by HK$2.725 billion, and guochao (国潮) became Li-Ning's (李宁) core growth engine thereafter.
What you can take
When labeled 'tacky', change the stage: use international fashion to translate assets into trend, letting contrast persuade.
Since then
Li-Ning moved to Paris Fashion Week in June 2018, returned to NYFW in Feb 2019; 'China Li-Ning' became permanent with standalone stores. Revenue rose from RMB 6.74B (2014) to RMB 10.53B (2018), exceeding 2010 peak; June 2019 share price hit highest since 2010, market cap HK$41.7B. Securities Times said it 'rose strongly by borrowing guochao'. The show marked Chinese brands' shift from 'Made in China' to 'Designed in China', prompting rivals to follow.
