MBC's King of Mask Singer judges voices before faces — format sold to 50+ countries

Eight celebrities sing in elaborate masks while a studio audience votes on voice alone; losers unmask. Korea's first global variety format.

What it had to solve

MBC wanted a music competition that couldn't be won on popularity or appearance. The show launched as a regular Sunday program in April 2015 and quickly became one of Korea's highest-rated variety shows.

How it works

The King of Mask Singer rests on one rule: 'Leave your fame at the door.' Eight celebrities perform in elaborate masks that hide their age, career and face, singing head-to-head in tournament rounds while a 100-member studio audience votes. The loser of each duel must unmask on stage, and the winner keeps the mask until someone dethrones them.

MBC launched the show as a regular Sunday program in April 2015. Because identity is hidden, the guessing itself becomes the entertainment — panelists and viewers argue over who is behind each voice, and the unmasking moment is the payoff. MBC's own format description makes the game part of the design: 'the tantalizing guessing game between the mask singers and live audiences' is listed as one of the show's four attractions.

The idea travelled better than the show did. By January 2019 the format had been sold to about 20 countries, and the American version on Fox premiered to 9.368 million viewers, passing 10 million per episode in its early weeks. By May 2021 MBC said the format had been exported to more than 50 countries, making it Korea's first globally dominant variety format.

Why it lands

  • Hiding identity removes the factors — popularity, looks, age — that normally decide singing contests, so the competition is genuinely about voice.
  • The mask turns every unmasking into an event: surprise becomes a clip, a headline and a conversation.
  • Selling format rules rather than localized tape lets MBC scale the same show across markets with different languages and celebrities.
  • A predictable skeleton — duel, vote, unmask — gives every local version its own suspense while keeping the format instantly recognizable.

What it did

The US version on Fox premiered on January 2, 2019 to 9.368 million viewers and passed 10 million per episode; the format had sold to about 20 countries by early 2019 and to more than 50 by 2021, and MBC's version took Korea's first Best Returning Format award at the 2020 International Format Awards.

What you can take

Remove the unfair variable — fame, looks, age — and the format creates its own suspense; the reveal becomes a news event. The exportable asset is the rule, not the local star.

Since then

The show is still running in Korea, and its format sales grew from about 20 countries in early 2019 to more than 50 by 2021. In 2021 MBC licensed the Japanese version to Amazon Prime Video — the first Korean entertainment format to become a global OTT original — and the US version drew more than 10 million views per episode in its early weeks, more than a recent episode of The Big Bang Theory, according to producers. Adaptations have spread across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, turning 'K-format' into an export category of its own.
