HOO! turns children's speech therapy into a blowing game — IDEA 2025 Student Gold

A paper-box toy with airflow sensors turns children's articulation drills into play — HOO! wins one of only two IDEA 2025 Student Gold awards.

The ideaRebuild the dull core of speech therapy — blowing — as a game: a paper box with airflow sensors gives real-time feedback, so children practise through play.incremental

What it had to solve

Speech therapists treat articulation disorders — roughly 50–70% of childhood language problems — with repetitive blowing exercises that children find boring, while parents worry about screen time.

How it works

HOO! is an educational tool designed by Tunghai University industrial-design alumni Zi-Ting Lin and Yi-Chen Hsu for speech-language therapists. Articulation disorders affect roughly 50–70% of children with language problems, and the standard training — repetitive blowing exercises to strengthen oral motor skills — is monotonous, so children resist it and parents worry about excessive screen exposure.

The designers centred the tool on blowing games: HOO!'s paper-box structure embeds electronic sensors that detect blowing intensity in real time and turn it into game feedback, combined with storytelling. Instead of a rigid therapy instrument, the object becomes a companion that can 'talk' to the child, increasing engagement and the willingness to keep training.

At the 2025 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), HOO! won the Gold Award in Student Design — one of only two Golds worldwide. The jury and the university's faculty credited its innovation, user experience and social value; the project is already a functioning prototype with potential for educational and clinical use.

Why it lands

  • It redesigns the core exercise rather than decorating it: blowing strength becomes the game input, so therapy time is play time.
  • The paper-box construction with embedded sensors is low-cost and screen-free, answering parents' real concern about digital exposure.
  • Interviews and field observation with therapists shaped the tool, so it solves the actual daily pain of the clinic rather than an imagined one.
  • A student project winning one of only two IDEA Golds shows a small, well-observed idea can compete with professional studios.

What it did

Won the Gold Award in Student Design at IDEA 2025 — one of only two Golds worldwide — with recognition for innovation, user experience and social value; the working prototype shows potential in education and clinical settings.

What you can take

When a behaviour is necessary but boring, redesign the activity itself, not the reward around it: turning the core exercise into gameplay makes therapy — or any routine — something kids keep doing.

Since then

After the award, Tunghai University presented the win as proof that student design can reach a global stage. HOO! remains a working prototype whose potential for educational and clinical application has been noted, positioning it for further development with speech-therapy partners.
