For its 65th anniversary Honda UK wanted a brand film that showed the curiosity behind the company's journey from engine maker to the largest engine manufacturer and racing company in the world — no product hero shots and no spoken claims, just the machines themselves.

Let one engineer's hands fold 65 years of Honda machines into each other — from the Type A engine to ASIMO and the HondaJet — in a single continuous two-minute film.

W+K London and directors Smith & Foulkes (Nexus) built the film as one invisible transition after another: an engineer's hands click and morph miniatures from the Type A engine through the Super Cub, Civics, NSX and ASIMO to the HondaJet, with VFX by Nexus and Analog. It premiered as Channel 4 Documentaries sponsorship bumpers on June 18, 2013, then the full film launched on Honda UK's YouTube channel and social channels.

The full film was viewed more than 12.3 million times and shared about 598,000 times by June 2014 — the tenth most-viewed ad on that year's Cannes Film Lions shortlist — and won two Silver Lions (Visual Effects, Sound Design) and a Bronze Lion (Corporate Images) at Cannes 2014.

In the summer of 2013 Honda UK marked the company's 65th anniversary with 'Hands', a two-minute brand film by Wieden+Kennedy London. Directed by Smith & Foulkes of Nexus Productions, it shows one pair of an engineer's hands folding, snapping and clicking miniature Honda machines into one another — a seamless chain condensing 65 years of innovation into a single continuous film.

The objects tell the story: it opens with a nut that becomes Honda's first engine, the Type A, then moves through the 1958 Super Cub, Isle of Man TT winners, the original and current Civic, the NSX and its new concept, ASIMO and the early robot E3, the solar-powered Dream car and hydrogen FCX Clarity, ending with Soichiro Honda's dream of personal flight, the HondaJet. Visual effects by Nexus and Analog made every transition invisible.

The film premiered as bumper breaks in Honda's fourth year sponsoring Channel 4 Documentaries on June 18, 2013, and the full version launched on Honda UK's YouTube and social channels in July. By June 2014 it had been viewed 12,397,257 times and shared 598,198 times — the tenth most-viewed ad on the Cannes Film Lions shortlist — and won two Silver Lions for Visual Effects and Sound Design plus a Bronze Lion for Corporate Images.

It made the product range the narrative: every transition was a real Honda artifact, so 65 years of engineering history was demonstrated rather than narrated.

The craft was the message: invisible VFX made impossible transformations feel natural, proving the curiosity the campaign claimed.

It was a film-first launch: sponsorship bumpers teased the work, then the full film went to YouTube and social, letting the piece earn its own distribution.

It stripped away claims and logos — no spoken benefit, no hard sell — trusting the machines and the hands to carry the brand.

When a brand's whole history is the idea, let craft carry the claim: one continuous, invisible-transition film made 65 years of engineering feel inevitable — the film itself became the proof.

Honda 'Hands' became a benchmark for invisible VFX transitions in brand filmmaking, and its honors at Cannes 2014 were shared by the production and effects teams, cementing Nexus and Smith & Foulkes as masters of the form. The campaign extended Honda's Channel 4 Documentaries sponsorship, and W+K London continued its long creative relationship with the brand, which had produced the earlier 'Cog' film in 2003.
