Honda's 'The Beautiful Fail' prints its 2022 Le Mans defeat in engine-oil ink

After Honda's bike finishes third at Le Mans 2022, DDB Paris turns its drained engine oil into ink and screen-prints the story of the defeat.

What it had to solve

At the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans, Honda had the chance to become the most successful manufacturer in the race's history — then its bike finished third. A lost title normally earns a 'we'll get them next year' slogan; Honda wanted the defeat itself to carry meaning.

How it works

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is endurance racing's most prestigious prize. In the 2022 edition Honda arrived with history on the line: a win would make it the most successful manufacturer in the race's history. Its bike finished third. In motorsport marketing a near-miss is usually softened into a promise to come back stronger — Honda chose the opposite route and built the campaign around the defeat itself.

'The Beautiful Fail' began with a strange material: engine oil drained from the bike that had actually raced Le Mans. The oil was refined into ink, and with it the team screen-printed 24 images, one for each hour of the race, capturing the joys, doubts and disappointments of the crew across the day. Each print carried text describing a pivotal moment.

The prints were released as a limited set and given away through a 24-hour Instagram competition, turning the defeat into objects people could own. Nothing was softened: the ink itself carried the race, so every print was literally made from the machine and the moment it documented.

The judges who saw it read the gesture as the point — D&AD's jury noted that the idea of failing is more powerful than winning. The campaign is preserved in D&AD's archive and took Gold in Industry Craft at Cannes Lions 2023.

Why it lands

  • The engine oil is the idea made physical: ink from the actual race bike means the campaign cannot be separated from the race it documents.
  • Twenty-four prints for twenty-four hours turns a race report into a complete, collectible narrative of the defeat.
  • Giving the prints away through a 24-hour Instagram window matches the format to the story and makes fans hunt for the moment rather than the winner.
  • By refusing to spin the loss, Honda made a third-place finish more talked about and more awarded than a routine victory message would have been.

What it did

The work is preserved in D&AD's awards archive, where the jury said the idea of failing is more powerful than winning; at Cannes Lions 2023 the craft took Gold in Industry Craft, making a third-place finish Honda's most decorated story of the season.

What you can take

When you cannot win, own the loss: printing the defeat in engine oil from the bike that lost makes the story inseparable from the race itself — honesty and craft beat generic next-year optimism.

Since then

Unveiled at motorcycle shows in early 2023, The Beautiful Fail became the memorial of Honda's near-miss, and within months the campaign was preserved in D&AD's Annual and had won an Industry Craft Gold at Cannes Lions 2023. It has since stood as a reference for treating defeat as content: proof that a loss, handled with craft and honesty, can be more ownable than the victory story that never happened.
