Orange fakes men's football highlights — the stars were women all along

Orange aired a 'men's highlights reel', then revealed every play really came from the French women's team — winning the One Show 2024 Best of Show.

What it had to solve

Orange sponsors both French national teams but women's football still faces significant gender bias among fans; the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup was the moment to confront it.

How it works

Orange is a historical sponsor of French football — a former public service whose mission was to unite people — and it supports both the men's and women's national teams. But women's football still faced deep gender bias among fans, so as the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup approached, Orange chose to confront the prejudice head-on rather than celebrate around it.

The film looks, for one minute, like a never-before-seen compilation of the French men's national team: the beautiful play of Mbappé, Giroud and Griezmann in sequence, fast editing, an adrenaline soundtrack. Then the reveal lands: every action was actually made by the French women's team. FX effects had faked the appearance of the men onto the first part of the compilation; part two replays the same actions without any effects, so audiences can admire the skill stripped of the filter of gender stereotypes.

Perfect illusion demanded perfect craft — production by Prodigious, post-production by Les Artisans du Film, a VFX-heavy pipeline that had to survive the close-up. The trick worked as a statement about perception: the plays never changed, only the names the audience assumed.

Why it lands

  • The highlight-reel format already celebrates male football, so the audience's enthusiasm was earned before the reveal could be doubted.
  • The reveal only stripped an illusion away — the same moves stayed on screen, giving the 'women play worse' claim nowhere to hide.
  • A historic sponsor of French football had built-in legitimacy to speak about the national teams, whatever the film chose to say.
  • The VFX deception was disclosed inside the film itself, turning a possible stunt into a comment on how bias shapes what fans see.

What it did

One Show 2024 Best of Show with 135 points; a D&AD jury comment called it 'a very powerful take on a much-ignored topic'.

What you can take

To break a stereotype, borrow its authority: get audiences to admire the work before they know who made it, then let the reveal do the rethinking.
