MINI USA sends waitlisted buyers a life-size puzzle of their car — 100M impressions
When the supply crisis left 4,000 MINI buyers waiting, the brand mailed them giant car-size puzzles that took months to complete.
MINI USA
What it had to solve
The global supply chain crisis meant nearly 4,000 MINI buyers could not get the cars they had ordered, leaving them on a months-long waiting list with nothing but a delayed delivery ahead.
How it works
In 2022 the global supply chain crisis hit car buyers hard, and MINI was no exception: nearly 4,000 buyers could not get the cars they had ordered, facing a months-long wait with no date in sight. A brand that had sold them a car now had to hold the relationship through a delay it could not fix.
So MINI gave them something big — a giant, life-size puzzle of their future MINI that would take months to complete. The Not-So-MINI Puzzles were delivered to every buyer on the waiting list, turning the empty garage into a project that mirrored the wait itself.
The responses rolled in as people unboxed the puzzle, tried to complete it, or simply said thanks. The puzzle became an instant collectible among MINI fans and drew over 100 million impressions — and by the end of 2022, all the real MINIs had been delivered to everyone on the list.
Why it lands
- A life-size puzzle takes months to finish, so its completion timeline deliberately mirrors the delivery wait and reframes delay as anticipation.
- The gift kept the car present in the buyer's life — the exact life-size shape of their MINI sitting in the garage or living room while they waited.
- Every unboxing was a social moment: people shared the absurd scale of the task, which is how one stunt generated over 100 million impressions.
- The cheeky format matched MINI's fun personality, so apologising for a logistics failure felt on-brand rather than defensive.
What it did
The puzzles became an instant collectible among MINI fans and drew over 100 million impressions. Best of all, by the end of 2022 every customer on the waiting list had received their real MINI.
What you can take
When you cannot deliver the product on time, give customers the waiting itself — a playful object sized to the delay turns frustration into a story people want to post.
Since then
The Not-So-MINI Puzzle became an instant collectible among MINI fans and one of the more remembered responses to the 2022 supply crisis; D&AD's awards archive files it under Direct. The campaign's real close came when every customer on the waiting list received their actual car by the end of 2022, ending the delay the puzzle had been designed to fill.
