H&M lends job seekers a suit for 24 hours — One/Second/Suit
As pandemic unemployment bit, H&M let job seekers borrow a full suit outfit free for a day, so a one-second first impression couldn't cost them the interview.
H&M
What it had to solve
As pandemic-era unemployment mounted in early 2021, men going to job interviews faced a catch: research showed employers judged competence within one second of meeting a candidate, yet a jobless budget could not stretch to the sharp suit that first impression depends on.
How it works
The insight behind One/Second/Suit was small and cruel: research suggested an employer judged a job applicant's competence within one second of meeting them. As an unemployment crisis took hold in 2021, that made the interview a lottery for men who could not afford the clothes the moment demanded.
So H&M launched One/Second/Suit with London agency Uncommon Creative Studio: any man with a job interview could borrow a complete outfit — navy suit, white shirt, tie and pocket square — free for 24 hours. The suit was delivered to his home in a garment bag; return it on time and delivery and dry-cleaning cost nothing, while late returns triggered a fee H&M donated to charity.
The campaign turned a social problem into a retail service the brand could actually run, and press on both sides of the Atlantic covered the scheme as it rolled out in spring 2021. The work entered D&AD's awards archive, where the jury called it simple and impactful while adding real value to the brand.
Why it lands
- It solves the problem with the product itself instead of describing the problem in an ad.
- The one-second-judgment research gives the suit a precise job: winning the moment before the interview begins.
- A 24-hour loan with free cleaning is a repeatable system, so one suit serves many job seekers.
- Charging only when borrowers are late, and donating those fees, keeps the scheme humane rather than commercial.
What it did
A job interview became something a broke candidate could dress for: One/Second/Suit launched in the UK in April 2021 with a US rollout in May, drew press on both sides of the Atlantic, and entered D&AD's awards archive under Experiential: Activation & Participation, where the jury called it simple and impactful while adding real value to the brand.
What you can take
If the product is the missing asset in a customer's life moment, lend it: a free 24-hour loan converts an unaffordable need into brand proof the borrower remembers.
Since then
One/Second/Suit launched in the UK in April 2021 and in the US the following month, with H&M calling the outfit 'ready-to-wear confidence' and adding interview guidance to its site. It stood as one of H&M's best-known purpose campaigns of the pandemic era and is documented in the D&AD awards archive as an activation that added real value to the brand.
