Grindr turns wool from rescued gay sheep into a runway collection — Grand Clio 2026

Grindr links a German farm that rescues gay rams with designer Michael Schmidt — 36 looks of Rainbow Wool yarn debut at a NYC runway show.

What it had to solve

Around one in twelve rams shows same-sex preference, so breeding farms treat them as expendable and often send them to slaughter. At a moment of rising anti-gay narratives, Grindr wanted to make gay identity visible — and prove it is part of nature.

How it works

In November 2025 Grindr presented 'I Wool Survive', a Michael Schmidt collection made entirely from the wool of rescued gay rams. Around one in twelve rams shows no interest in mating with ewes, and on breeding farms they are treated as expendable and often sent to slaughter — a practice Schmidt described to The New York Times as 'the sheep are killed for being gay.'

Grindr acted as the connector: it brought together Rainbow Wool, a German nonprofit farm near Cologne founded by shepherd Michael Stücke, and LA designer Michael Schmidt, whose clients include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Cher. Schmidt knitted 36 handcrafted looks from Rainbow Wool yarn, drawing on gay archetypes — sailors, cowboys, firefighters — and the collection debuted with a runway show at The Altman Building in New York on 13 November 2025.

The show was both fashion and argument. Schmidt called it an art project selling the idea that homosexuality is part of the animal kingdom, not a choice, while Grindr's Tristan Pineiro framed it as a metaphor for how gay people are treated across the world. Select pieces were auctioned to support LGBTQ+ initiatives, and the campaign won the 2026 Grand Clio in Culture & Influence, with a Silver and a Bronze following.

Why it lands

  • It found a factual, surprising proof point — one in twelve rams is gay — and built the entire campaign on it.
  • The brand acted as connector rather than author: Grindr's own logic of matching strangers produced the collaboration itself.
  • Fashion gave the message a beautiful, shareable surface: 36 looks of real wool made a serious issue feel joyful.
  • The runway turned a hidden industry practice into earned media, fundraising and cultural visibility for LGBTQ+ causes.

What it did

The debut runway show drew global press coverage and the campaign won the 2026 Grand Clio in Culture & Influence, plus a Silver and a Bronze Clio; Grindr continued supporting Rainbow Wool's mission through 2026.

What you can take

Pair a hidden injustice with an unexpected luxury partner: when a farmer and a celebrity designer meet through a brand, an obscure cause becomes a runway story the world shares.

Since then

The New York debut at The Altman Building was followed by an after-party at The Eagle NYC, and select pieces went to auction to support LGBTQ+ initiatives worldwide. Grindr said it would continue supporting Rainbow Wool's mission through 2026. The campaign swept the 2026 Clio Awards with a Grand in Culture & Influence plus a Silver and a Bronze. Schmidt and Stücke both framed the collection as proof that same-sex attraction exists across the animal kingdom — a message spun, literally, from animals saved rather than discarded.
