Zara Pre-Owned brings resale, repair and donation in-house — a first for Inditex
The fast-fashion giant's first resale service turns stores into repair hubs and hangtag scans into its own peer-to-peer marketplace.

What it had to solve
Zara clothes were already widely resold on other platforms and Instagram, yet Inditex had never offered a service to resell its own products — while rival H&M already had one.
How it works
By 2022 Zara was one of the most-resold fast-fashion labels on platforms like Vinted and Instagram — but every one of those transactions happened outside Inditex. In October that year the group announced Pre-Owned, its first-ever resale service, launching in the UK on 3 November across Zara's 60 stores, website and app.
The model was deliberately three-pronged. Sellers could list used Zara garments free, with a barcode or hangtag scan pulling in the brand's own photos and composition data; buyers paid a £1 fee plus 5% service charge. Any Zara garment, however old, could be repaired in store or by post. And a take-back scheme — extended to home pickup — passed unwanted clothing of any brand to the British Red Cross.
Zara's sustainability head Paula Ampuero called it a test with no target numbers: the point was to see whether a circular model could work at fast-fashion scale. Reuters noted the move brought in-house 'the success of second-hand Zara clothing sales on other online platforms', framing the platform not as a new business but as reclaiming demand that already existed.
Why it lands
- Zara already had the resale demand — on Vinted, eBay and Instagram — so building its own platform captured volume the brand neither controlled nor profited from.
- The barcode-to-listing flow uses Zara's own catalogue data to make seller listings accurate, solving resale's biggest trust problem.
- Repair of any garment, from any season, turns Zara stores into service hubs and keeps clothes in use instead of landfill.
- Running the pilot only in the UK let Inditex test fees, logistics and demand in one demanding market before committing to France, Germany and Spain.
What it did
Zara became the first Inditex brand with a resale service, capturing second-hand sales that Reuters said were already booming on outside platforms, then expanded Pre-Owned to France, Germany and Spain during 2023.
What you can take
When a product already has a secondhand market you don't control, win it with trust infrastructure — verified product data, repair and take-back — instead of fighting resale.
Since then
By May 2023 Inditex said Pre-Owned would expand to France and Germany and then Spain before the end of the year, with CEO Óscar García Maceiras calling the platform part of the group's circularity strategy. The platform remained exclusive to Zara-brand items and peer-to-peer between customers, and rival secondhand activity across the industry — from H&M to luxury houses — confirmed that owned resale had become a standard channel for fashion brands rather than an experiment.
