American Apparel's AArt Gallery sells one black tee like art at the printwear expo
At a trade show where rivals showed full ranges, Gildan's American Apparel exhibited a single premium 2001 tee in a museum-style gallery — and stole the show.
American Apparel (Gildan)
What it had to solve
American Apparel, Gildan's decorated-apparel brand, needed a presence at the printwear industry's biggest trade event, where every competitor was showing off entire product ranges.
How it works
American Apparel, Gildan's decorated-apparel brand, needed to stand out at the printwear industry's biggest trade event. The floor was crowded with competitors showing off entire product ranges, each booth shouting about variety in the same way.
LG2's answer inverted the category's logic: instead of more product, one product. The AArt Gallery borrowed the codes of an art museum — a black-and-white, gallery-like aesthetic with staging, pedestals, labels and display cases — to showcase a single premium garment, the classic black 2001 tee, through seven innovative art installations that explored its quality.
Against a sea of ranges, the one-product gallery disrupted the event and stole the show, giving American Apparel a premium launch moment among trade buyers. The booth is preserved in D&AD's awards archive and went on to collect honours including an Applied Arts 2023 award and an Idéa 2023 Bronze.
Why it lands
- Focus beats abundance on a crowded trade floor: one product shown with conviction is easier to remember than a hundred shown without.
- Museum codes — restraint, pedestals, labels — imported the value language of art onto a humble tee.
- Seven installations gave visitors a reason to move through the space slowly and engage with the product's quality.
- Launching a repositioning at the industry's own event put the story in front of the buyers who would sell it on.
What it did
The single-product concept disrupted the event and stole the show in a sea of range displays. The work is preserved in D&AD's awards archive and won honours including an Applied Arts 2023 award and an Idéa 2023 Bronze.
What you can take
When everyone at a trade show competes on range, the counter-move is focus: turn one product into a spectacle with museum-like staging, and the attention — and the product's value — follows.
Since then
The AArt Gallery debuted at the Impressions Expo in Long Beach in January 2023, the same show where Gildan unveiled new positioning for American Apparel and its other brands. The single-shirt gallery became the example of the campaign: one product, museum staging, seven installations. The work is preserved in D&AD's awards archive and won Applied Arts 2023 and Idéa 2023 Bronze honours, standing as a model of single-product focus at trade events.
