Hakuhodo coined 'sei-katsu-sha' in 1981, starting Japan's planning philosophy.

Hakuhodo founded the Life and Living Institute in 1981, coining 'sei-katsu-sha': targets became people with lives, not just buyers.

What it had to solve

In 1981, when Japan's second-largest advertising company Hakuhodo (博报堂) founded the Hakuhodo Institute of Life and Living (生活综合研究所, HILL), the industry understood the audience as shohisha (消费者), focusing only on purchasing behavior; the company wanted a more complete, more Japanese starting point for planning.

How it works

In 1981, Japan's second-largest advertising company Hakuhodo (博报堂) founded the Hakuhodo Institute of Life and Living (生活综合研究所, HILL) in Tokyo and coined a term that would later define the company: sei-katsu-sha (生活者). It renamed the advertising target from 'consumer' (shohisha, 消费者) to 'a person with a life' — not just purchasing, but lifestyle, preferences, dreams, and daily routines. A 2009 report by The Edge Malaysia quoted Hakuhodo executives: even in English conversations, none of the five representatives used the word 'consumer'.

This naming was not wordplay. From 1981, HILL used long-term tracking surveys to study changes in sei-katsu-sha values, turned 'sei-katsu-sha ideation' (生活者发想) into a reusable planning methodology, and developed advertising models such as Engagement Ring; the philosophy ran through proposals, services, and staffing. Hakuhodo's official materials say that the sei-katsu-sha concept is now not only common knowledge in marketing but also widely known among the Japanese public.

More than forty years later, this remains the company's strategic anchor: the official website's vision page states that 'Hakuhodo is evolving into a Sei-katsu-sha Value Design Company,' and the global creative director explained it as 'sei-katsu-sha means people with lives, not consumers.' Hakuhodo brought this philosophy from Japan to Southeast Asia and global markets, expanding its network through 'deep understanding of local life' rather than a global template.

Why it lands

  • Naming determines the object of study: changing the audience from 'purchasing behavior' to 'the entire life' immediately widens the entry point for insight, and the solutions naturally differ.
  • The institute operated independently of day-to-day projects, providing an institutional vehicle for the concept's continuous evolution rather than a one-off slogan.
  • Executives insisted on using the new term even in external settings; internal consistency turned the philosophy into the company's public identity.
  • Turning the philosophy into methodologies and models (sei-katsu-sha ideation, Engagement Ring) that clients could use directly allowed the concept to survive for more than forty years.

What it did

The Edge reported that the concept put Hakuhodo (博报堂) ahead of its peers in 1981 and is now common language in Japanese marketing; Hakuhodo built its global network of 17 countries and 68 offices as of 2009 on the 'sei-katsu-sha' (生活者) concept, and rewrote its identity from an advertising company to a Sei-katsu-sha Value Design Company.

What you can take

Changing one word changes perspective: 'sei-katsu-sha' shifted insight from purchasing behavior to entire lives.

Since then

sei-katsu-sha became the common language of the global network of Hakuhodo (博报堂): from the Tokyo headquarters to HILL offices in Shanghai, Bangkok, and other locations, and from 2015 it also stationed visiting researchers at nationwide locations. In 2026, Hakuhodo International, in an interview with adobo Magazine, still defined itself by 'sei-katsu-sha value design' and regarded Southeast Asia as a global creativity center. The phrase 'human-centered' later became an industry norm, but Hakuhodo, by claiming this term in 1981, turned one naming into forty years of differentiation.
