NotebookLM turns documents into an AI podcast — the feature that made it a 2024 hit

One click makes two AI hosts discuss your uploaded sources like a podcast — the feature turned Google's research assistant into a viral hit.

The ideaTurn uploaded sources into a podcast: one click makes two AI hosts hold a lively 'deep dive' — summarizing, connecting and bantering — so research becomes listenable.substantial

What it had to solve

NotebookLM, Google Labs' Gemini-powered research assistant, let users upload sources and chat with them, but everything happened on screen. The team wanted people to understand the same material while walking or commuting, for those who learn better by listening.

How it works

In September 2024 Google Labs added Audio Overviews to NotebookLM, its Gemini-powered research assistant. The idea: instead of only reading your sources, one click would turn them into a conversation — two AI hosts holding a lively 'deep dive' that summarizes the material, connects the topics and banter back and forth, all grounded in the user's uploads.

The execution was deliberately minimal. In a notebook's guide, clicking 'Generate' produced an 8–10 minute podcast with male and female AI voices that interrupted each other and sounded startlingly human; the audio could be downloaded and taken on the go. At launch it was experimental — English-only, occasionally inaccurate, and listeners could not interrupt.

Within weeks it became a viral hit. Andrej Karpathy said the Deep Dive became his favorite podcast and built his own series in two hours; people fed NotebookLM everything from research papers to résumés. The Verge called Audio Overviews a 'surprise hit' of 2024, and in December Spotify shipped its first-ever Wrapped AI podcast, generating personalized year-in-music recaps with the same technology.

Google kept building: December 2024 added Interactive mode so listeners could ask the hosts questions and get answers from their own sources, plus a Studio panel and a NotebookLM Plus subscription tier. By April 2025 Audio Overviews were available in more than 50 languages, cementing the feature as NotebookLM's signature.

Why it lands

  • Turning reading into listening opened the product to people who learn better by ear — a different medium, not a different format.
  • Grounded in the user's own sources, the hosts could summarize and connect without inventing a topic, which made the output feel trustworthy.
  • Two-host banter made AI output feel human and entertaining — exactly what made the demos worth sharing.
  • Shipping as one click inside an existing tool let a small Labs team turn an experiment into a viral feature.

What it did

Audio Overviews became a surprise viral hit within weeks — Andrej Karpathy called the Deep Dive his favorite podcast; Spotify shipped personalized 2024 Wrapped AI podcasts built on the same technology, and by April 2025 the feature reached more than 50 languages, making it NotebookLM's signature.

What you can take

The same content becomes a new product when you change the medium: turning documents into a conversation made a quiet study tool viral, because people learn, share and remember by listening.

Since then

In 2025 Google expanded Audio Overviews to more than 50 languages, added video overviews and customization options, and brought the technology into Gemini and Google Docs; NotebookLM Plus added team and enterprise tiers. Spotify's Wrapped AI podcast showed other companies treating NotebookLM's audio as an embeddable platform, and the feature became the template for AI-generated conversation across the industry.
