Gmarket turns monthly sales into a fake rock festival — 210M views, ADFEST Silver

Korean music legends re-sing their hits with shopping-category lyrics — 36 films that made each monthly sale feel like a rock festival.

Gmarket · Chai Communication

The ideaTurn each monthly sale into a rock festival: license Korean music legends to re-sing hits with shopping-category lyrics, so a discount becomes content people wait for.substantial

What it had to solve

Gmarket, the e-commerce platform owned by Korea's Shinsegae Group, needed its recurring promotions — the monthly G-Rock Festival sale, Big Smile Day, Lunar New Year Big Sale — to stand out. The strategic goal was to reposition Gmarket as a cheerful, lively brand for every age group instead of just another discount channel.

How it works

Gmarket runs its biggest promotions on set dates every month, but a sale is easy to ignore when every competitor offers one. The Shinsegae-owned e-commerce platform set out to reposition itself as a 'cheerful and lively' brand for all ages, and chose music as the vehicle: a campaign built around the idea of enjoying shopping the way you enjoy a rock festival.

With Seoul agency Chai Communication, Gmarket licensed Korean rock and pop acts whose songs carry strong nostalgia — Kim Kyung-ho, Park Wan-kyu, Cherry Filter, Seol Woon-do, Kim Jong-seo, Hwanhee, Min Kyung-hoon, Ailee, Jaurim and H.O.T., ten teams — and had them perform their signature hits with the lyrics reworked to name shopping categories and the promotions. From September 2025 to January 2026 the team released 36 serialized short films, each new one tied to that month's event such as the G-Rock Festival sale on the first days of the month, Big Smile Day or the Lunar New Year sale.

Treating the songs as content rather than conventional spots made the campaign feel like a music program with a schedule: Korean press described the films as 'ads people wait for'. The numbers backed that up — the 36 films accumulated 210 million YouTube views over the five months, and products featured in the ads saw sales rise by up to 2.6 times and unit volume by up to 3.3 times against the previous month, led by fresh and processed food categories such as pork, beef and crab.

The campaign then swept through both regional and domestic awards: a Bronze in Music at Spikes Asia 2026 in Singapore, a Silver in Creative Strategy at ADFEST 2026 in Pattaya, plus Korea's Ad of the Year Grand Prize in integrated media, the Seoul Video Ad Festival Grand Prix and more — around nine category wins across six festivals, validating the bet that a commerce event could be built as music-led brand content.

Why it lands

  • Familiar hit songs gave the campaign instant recognition, while re-sung shopping lyrics created the surprise that made each installment worth watching again.
  • Serializing one film per monthly event turned a discount calendar into an entertainment schedule, so the audience kept waiting for the next episode.
  • Casting ten different acts across genres and eras widened the audience from older fans of 1990s rock to younger viewers discovering the artists.
  • The music stayed the product: because the ad was entertaining on its own, YouTube and social distribution did the work that paid media usually has to buy.

What it did

The films drew a cumulative 210 million YouTube views in five months, and products that appeared in the ads sold up to 2.6 times more (by volume up to 3.3 times) month over month. The campaign took a Silver in Creative Strategy at ADFEST 2026 and a Bronze in Music at Spikes Asia 2026, after winning Korea's Ad of the Year Grand Prize, Seoul Video Ad Festival Grand Prix and other honors.

What you can take

Recurring sales can be built as serialized entertainment: when familiar songs are re-sung with category-specific lyrics, audiences wait for the next installment instead of skipping the ad.

Since then

The G-Rock Festival ran from September 2025 to January 2026 and kept earning after it ended: a Bronze in Music at Spikes Asia 2026 in Singapore, then a Silver in Creative Strategy at ADFEST 2026 in Pattaya. At home it took the 33rd Ad of the Year Grand Prize for integrated media plus the top TV ad prize, the Seoul Video Ad Festival Grand Prix and a Korea Digital Ad Awards gold — nine awards across six festivals. Gmarket said the campaign repositioned the platform as a cheerful, lively brand for all ages, and Korean trade coverage cited it as a model for turning promotions into programming.
