Travis Scott plays a concert inside Fortnite — 12.3M people attend live
Epic turned Fortnite into a concert venue: a giant Travis Scott avatar staged ten-minute shows that drew 27.7M unique players.
Epic Games
What it had to solve
By April 2020 the pandemic had killed live music, and Epic had already tested in-game concerts with Marshmello in 2019. Travis Scott's team and Epic scaled the format: five 'Astronomical' shows across April 23–25, inside the game, premiering the new single 'The Scotts' day-and-date.
How it works
On April 23–25, 2020, Travis Scott performed 'Astronomical' inside Fortnite: five ten-minute shows in which the usual game was replaced by a concert. A titanic avatar of Scott crashed in as an asteroid, took over the island, and carried the audience underwater, into space and through surreal landscapes as the world changed with each track, with combat and the usual interface disabled.
It was a format Epic had tested a year earlier, when Marshmello drew about 10.7 million concurrent players for the game's first in-game concert. Astronomical scaled the idea into a full music event: the show premiered 'The Scotts' with Kid Cudi day-and-date, players queued into 100-person lobbies, and the whole thing was livestreamed on Twitch and YouTube alongside millions of fan streams.
The numbers reset the standard: 12.3 million concurrent players at the peak, an all-time Fortnite record, and 27.7 million unique players participating 45.8 million times across the five shows. 'The Scotts' debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and set Spotify's 2020 first-day stream record; the Travis Scott x Fortnite merch sold out in minutes, and Clio Music gave the campaign its Grand Clio for Experience/Activation.
Why it lands
- It used the game itself as the venue, so capacity was the player base — no ticketing, no physical limit, and an audience that already knew how to be there
- The format treated gravity and scenery as instruments, creating spectacle no physical stage could reproduce
- The day-and-date single fused event and product, sending 'The Scotts' to No. 1 while the shows were still running
- Combat and UI were switched off, turning a battle royale into a shared watching experience — a deliberate break with the game's own grammar
What it did
12.3 million concurrent players at the peak — Fortnite's all-time record, beating Marshmello's 10.7 million — and 27.7 million unique players took part 45.8 million times across the five shows. 'The Scotts' debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and set Spotify's 2020 first-day streaming record; the merch sold out in minutes and the campaign won a Grand Clio for Experience/Activation.
What you can take
When the venue is the medium, a concert becomes a world: gravity, scenery and scale change with every song, and the game's audience is the venue's capacity — millions who already know how to show up.
Since then
Astronomical became the reference point for virtual concerts: Pollstar framed it as a turning point for a live business shut down by COVID-19, noting the event reportedly generated 45 million views and rivaled Super Bowl-scale reach while the artist and game captured data and merch revenue. Scott's streams rose 124% and his artist station adds jumped 540% in the week after the shows. Clio Music's Grand Clio made the campaign an industry benchmark, and the Marshmello-to-Travis arc reset expectations for what a game can be as a content platform.
