Error Brewing's hazy NEIPA wears its flaws on the bottle — iF Gold 2026

What it had to solve

New England IPAs are famously hazy, unfiltered and a little rough-edged, while beer shelves reward clean, polished packaging; the brand wanted a bottle that told the truth about an 'imperfect' beer and still stood out.

How it works

New England IPA is a style defined by what the mainstream beer industry treats as defects: it is hazy, unfiltered, naturally cloudy, and proud of it. Error Brewing Co. and Barcelona design studio Dsigntank (with Series Nemo) decided the packaging should make that stance unmistakable, not apologize for it.

The design abandons symmetric composition and straight lines. Text is printed directly onto textured bottles made from 100% recycled glass, so the bottle's natural undulations give every unit a slightly different surface; where the screen printing breaks or deforms, the golden glow of the beer seeps through the lettering and becomes part of the visual. The bottle reads as deliberately imperfect — matching a beer that is 'handcrafted, hazy and deliberately unconventional'.

The approach earned the 2026 iF Design Award Gold in the beverage packaging category, one of only two Golds among Spanish entries that year. The jury described the silkscreen bottle as a 'prism of letters' that holds two contradictory qualities together: apparent imperfection and refined craft, speaking to beer experts while pulling newcomers in.

Why it lands

  • The packaging is the brand proposition: the beer's defining 'flaw' is declared on the shelf instead of being hidden.
  • Using 100% recycled glass with printed-on texture makes sustainability part of the aesthetic rather than a trade-off.
  • Breaking the lettering turns a production anomaly into the design, so each bottle feels unique and hand-made.
  • The idea scales to the whole brand story — the beer is called ERROR, and the bottle completes the joke.

What it did

Won iF Design Award 2026 Gold in Packaging Design–Beverages Packaging — one of only two Golds among Spanish entries that year; the jury praised the bottle as a 'prism of letters' letting imperfection and craft coexist.

What you can take

When the product's flaw is its selling point, let the packaging say so: designing the imperfection in makes a mass-produced bottle feel hand-made and one of a kind.

Since then

ERROR, Offbeat Beer was featured among the 2026 iF Gold winners in Chinese design media as a reference point for 'imperfect aesthetics' in packaging, alongside Golds from WAZU sake and other beverage packages. For Error Brewing, the award validated an anti-perfect brand identity built around the style's signature haze; the bottle remains the clearest expression of the brand's position that not everything needs to be flawless.
