Blizzard turns a dead Seoul subway platform into Diablo's Hell Station

A disused subway platform becomes Diablo IV's 'Hell Station' — visitors investigate the game's world in person before launch; ADFEST 2024 Silver.

Blizzard Entertainment · Cheil Worldwide

The ideaRebuild Diablo's Hell inside a disused subway platform: visitors become investigators probing 'paranormal phenomena', walking a life-size game crime scene before launch.substantial

What it had to solve

Blizzard was launching Diablo IV worldwide on June 6, 2023 and needed Korean fans to feel the game's dark world before release. Seoul Metro had a B4 platform at Yeongdeungpo Market Station built for a cancelled Line 10 connection — unused for nearly 20 years with bare concrete walls.

How it works

In May 2023, weeks before Diablo IV's global release, Seoul's Yeongdeungpo Market Station Line 5 opened a hidden door. Behind a yellow gate, participants of 'Hell Station' descended into a B4 platform that had stood unused for nearly 20 years — it was built for a Line 10 connection that was cancelled, leaving bare concrete and an atmosphere that matched the game's underworld.

Blizzard, Cheil Worldwide and Seoul Metro turned the space into an immersive investigation. Lottery-selected visitors (18+, with warnings for the faint-hearted) first watched a fake news broadcast reporting paranormal incidents at the station, were registered by actors playing special agents, then walked into the dark with flashlights. The route included cult graffiti, blood, props, and motion-activated lighting, sound and smell straight from the game, climaxing in a staged siren evacuation.

The experience ran May 19 to June 11, 2023, on Fridays through Sundays, 14 sessions per day, and a 3D road-view video let people walk the Hell Station remotely. Seoul Metro framed it as a short-term cultural use of a low-traffic space, and said the station's concrete-and-shadow character made it the most fitting of the candidates it considered.

The launch-adjacent timing made the activation itself the news. Hankook Ilbo's on-site report quoted participants saying the game now felt more real and exciting, and Blizzard confirmed strong response from young gamers. The campaign later won ADFEST 2024 Brand Experience Lotus Silver and Bronze, and became a standard example of game IP experienced as a physical place.

Why it lands

  • It used a real, existing place as the set, so the campaign's 'media' was a space nobody else was using — near-zero location cost, maximum authenticity.
  • The investigation narrative turned passive viewing into participation: visitors were actors in the story, which made the memory of the game visceral.
  • Scarcity (lottery, age limit, small groups) created demand and made every ticket a shareable event.
  • It matched the brand's fiction to the city's reality — a genuinely creepy disused platform is exactly where Diablo's world should surface.

What it did

Lottery slots filled fast and word of mouth ran strong — Hankook Ilbo reported participants leaving with 'I'm even more excited for the game now', and Blizzard said response from young gamers was good. The activation won ADFEST 2024 Brand Experience Lotus Silver and Bronze, and became a reference for turning a game IP into a place people can physically enter.

What you can take

Find a place that already feels like your product's world and let the space tell the story — a disused platform cost no media but delivered immersion and earned coverage no ad buy could match.

Since then

Hell Station ran for a month and was widely covered as proof that game IPs could be sold by letting people physically enter the world. Seoul Metro said the project created conditions for ongoing cultural use of its idle spaces. The campaign then moved through the award circuit — ADFEST 2024 Brand Experience Silver and Bronze — and remains a cited case for experiential game marketing in Asia.
