Curitiba's 1974 'metro-ized bus' invents BRT — 2.3M passengers a day today

Too poor for a metro, 1970s Curitiba gave buses exclusive lanes, level-boarding tube stations and one flat fare — inventing BRT, now copied worldwide.

What it had to solve

In the early 1970s Curitiba, then a fast-growing city of about 400,000, had prepared plans for a light-rail system but could not afford its capital cost. Mayor Jaime Lerner and the IPPUC planning institute had to build a mass-transit option from the bus, normally treated as rail's poor cousin.

How it works

Curitiba, a fast-growing city in southern Brazil, wanted a light-rail system in the early 1970s but could not afford its capital cost. Mayor Jaime Lerner and the IPPUC planning institute instead gave the bus the infrastructure of a metro: dedicated corridors, land use and building density tied to the transit axes, and the first express lines opening on 22 September 1974 with 20 buses on two routes.

The system grew through steady invention: automatic ticketing in 1977, a trunk-and-feeder network under one flat fare so transfers were free, and in 1992 the iconic glass tube stations where passengers paid before boarding and stepped straight onto buses at platform level — cutting dwell time towards metro speed — alongside bi-articulated buses carrying up to 250 people.

The result, later named Bus Rapid Transit, became one of the most copied public-service ideas of the 20th century. Today the integrated network spans six axes with 81 km of dedicated busways, 357 tube stations and about 2.3M passengers a day; around 75% of commuters use it, and public transport accounts for roughly half of all trips in the city.

Why it lands

  • Metro-grade design was applied to the bus — exclusive lanes, level boarding, pre-paid fares, flat-fare integration — so speed and capacity came from the system, not the vehicle.
  • Land use was planned around the corridors, so density and ridership were designed in rather than hoped for.
  • One flat fare across trunk and feeder lines made the whole network feel like a single ride and kept transfers free.
  • It was cheap enough to build without mega-funding, so the city could keep innovating for decades instead of stopping at one project.

What it did

What started on 22 September 1974 with two express lines and 20 buses grew into the Rede Integrada de Transporte: six axes with 81 km of dedicated busways, 357 tube stations and about 2.3M passengers a day. Around 75% of Curitiba's commuters use the system, public transport accounts for roughly half of all trips, and the model — now called Bus Rapid Transit — was copied by 150+ cities, starting with Bogotá's TransMilenio.

When the ideal solution is unaffordable, change the vehicle, not the goal: apply metro-grade design — dedicated lanes, level boarding, pre-paid fares, integration — to the cheap mode you already have.

Since then

The network kept upgrading: integration with the metropolitan region in 1996, contactless e-ticketing in 2002, and in 2009 a 'Green Line' running on 100% biodiesel with rainwater-cooled stations. The BRT concept spread globally — Bogotá's TransMilenio and dozens of other systems explicitly copied Curitiba — and the city kept borrowing the model back to modernise, adding smart traffic priority, real-time passenger information and cycle routes along the corridors.
