What it had to solve

Carveco, a Warwickshire design-and-manufacturing software company, had built an AI 'Image to Relief' feature that turns flat images into tactile 3D models. To show what the technology was actually for, it asked a simple question: what if images could be experienced through touch, not just sight?

Carveco makes software for design and manufacturing. For the millions of people who are blind or visually impaired, photographs and artwork are usually off-limits — a shared experience for many is out of reach for others.

On 15 September 2025 Carveco staged a one-day exhibition, Touch: Beyond Vision, at London's OXO2 Gallery. More than 18 tactile artworks celebrating British culture — David Bowie and The Beatles, Stonehenge and Edinburgh Castle — were carved from plaster using the AI, each with braille labels, audio descriptions and clearly designed touchpoints so visitors could explore independently. A mural wall displayed personal photographs contributed by blind community members, made touchable through 3D printing.

The exhibition was developed with blind and visually impaired focus groups, educators and accessibility specialists, so the experience was shaped by the people it was for. Visitors ran their hands across textures that had previously existed only as pixels — what Carveco described as the ability to create 'tactile memories' at home, not just in galleries.

The project won three 2026 Webby Awards — AI Experimental & Innovation, Belonging & Inclusion, and Public Service & Activism — announced alongside winners from Google, Meta, Netflix and Apple. It became Carveco's demonstration that AI can be an inclusion technology, and a practical template for museums, educators and families wanting to make visual culture accessible.
