Café Joyeux's '47': a stop-motion first-job story made with its community

Klick Health made Café Joyeux a stop-motion film about a first job at 47 — made with the Down syndrome community, not just for it.

Café Joyeux

The ideaTell the true story of an employee's first job at 47 as a handcrafted stop-motion film — and let the Down syndrome community shape its characters, music and sound.substantial

What it had to solve

Café Joyeux runs café-restaurants that hire and train people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with 18 locations across Europe and its first US shop opening in Manhattan. Klick Health's challenge was to advertise the chain in a way that respected its staff; its answer was to make the community co-creators of the film rather than its subject.

How it works

Café Joyeux is a family of café-restaurants that hires and trains people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with 18 locations across Europe and its first US shop opening in Manhattan in 2024. Health agency Klick Health was asked to advertise the chain, and its creative problem was a delicate one: how do you promote an employer of people with disabilities without reducing its staff to an object of pity or inspiration?

Klick's answer was a short film called '47', named after the true story of a Café Joyeux employee with Down syndrome who did not get his first job until he was 47. The film follows Robert, a boy rejected by others as a child, on a nautical odyssey through choppy seas of rejection and prejudice until, at 47, he finds acceptance and purpose at Café Joyeux — a place that embraces his extraordinary abilities.

The film was created not just for the Down syndrome community but by it. Hero designer Bruno Jacob worked with his daughter Luna, who has Down syndrome; pianist Sujeet Desai and sound designer José Omar Davila, both born with Down syndrome, re-recorded FUN's 'Carry On' and built the soundscape with Canja Audio Culture. Zombie Studio handcrafted the stop-motion world with some 130 artists, making 11 versions of Robert from ages five to 47 and eight miniature sets full of tiny props.

The yellow scarf that guides Robert through the story doubles as Café Joyeux's brand colour and the encouragement of his mother, making the brand itself part of the emotional arc. Klick said the film lifted job applications, brand recognition and in-store traffic, and the work swept awards season: a Grand Clio in Film Craft and five Gold Clios at Clio Health 2024, a Silver Film Lion and three further awards at Cannes, and the Grand Prix in Health & Wellness Craft at the London International Awards.

Why it lands

  • Co-creation was the idea: putting the community inside the production made every frame of the film an act of the inclusion it was advertising.
  • A true story — a first job at 47 — gave the campaign a specific, earned emotional payoff instead of a generic message about disability.
  • Handcrafted stop-motion made the labour visible: audiences feel the care in 130 artists, handmade puppets and miniature sets.
  • The yellow scarf tied the brand to the story's emotional core, so the logo carried meaning rather than interrupting it.

What it did

Klick reported that the film increased Café Joyeux's job applications, brand recognition and in-store traffic. '47' won the Grand Clio in Film Craft plus five Gold Clios at Clio Health 2024, a Silver Film Lion and three further awards at Cannes, and the LIA Grand Prix in Health & Wellness Craft.

What you can take

When the people a campaign is about help make it, the craft proves the message: a film built by the community demonstrates inclusion more convincingly than any claim about it.

Since then

After its April 2024 release, '47' became one of the most decorated films of the year: a Grand Clio in Film Craft and five Golds at Clio Health 2024 (where Klick was named Independent Agency of the Year), a Silver Film Lion and three other awards at Cannes, and the LIA Grand Prix in Health & Wellness Craft. Klick credited the film with raising Café Joyeux's job applications and in-store traffic, and the project became an industry reference for 'nothing about us without us' production — casting and craft decisions that put the represented community inside the creative team.
