Burger King and Rappi sell a Whopper with McDonald's fries as one Impossible Combo
For one day in Sao Paulo, Rappi couriers picked up a Whopper at Burger King, stopped at McDonald's for fries, and delivered the rivals' food as a single order.

What it had to solve
Fast-food habit usually forces a choice between rival chains, and a Whopper with McDonald's fries on the same order was treated as impossible. Delivery app Rappi and Burger King set out to sell exactly that pairing, as a single combo meal.
How it works
Fast-food loyalty normally forces customers to choose one chain per order: a Whopper here, fries there, and never the two together. In June 2021 Burger King, delivery app Rappi and, in effect, a McDonald's restaurant on the delivery route treated that separation as the problem.
Rappi made the unthinkable orderable: for each Whopper bought through its app, a courier collected the burger at a Burger King, stopped at a McDonald's for a side of fries, and delivered the two rivals' food as one meal, the Ultimate Combo, in packaging made for the stunt.
The offer lasted one day and one city, Sao Paulo on 17 June 2021, but the mechanics were the message: the delivery route physically crossed the competitive line, which is why D&AD records the work as the first ever sale of the hybrid meal.
Why it lands
- The provocation is the product: ordering a Whopper with McDonald's fries makes an abstract rivalry tangible.
- Only a delivery platform could stage it, so Rappi's logistics were the campaign and the medium proved the claim.
- One-day scarcity in a single city turned a menu offer into an event people told each other about.
- The courier's two-stop journey doubled as the story, making every delivery earned content for the rivalry itself.
What it did
D&AD records that Burger King 'pulled off the first ever sale' of the Whopper-with-McDonald's-fries combo meal. The two-stop courier trip made the rivalry itself the spectacle, and the stunt is archived in D&AD's awards archive under its Direct category.
What you can take
When a claim sounds absurd, make the logistics prove it: an offer whose two-stop courier trip embodies the idea beats any advertisement saying the same thing.
Since then
The Impossible Combo ran on 17 June 2021 through Rappi in Sao Paulo, with Burger King using the moment to tease McDonald's on Twitter. D&AD files the work under Direct alongside other Burger King stunts, and its page records the mechanism rather than sales or reach figures: the campaign stands on the image of a courier carrying one order made of two competitors' food.
