Uber Eats 'proves' football is a conspiracy to sell food — record orders, Grand Effie

As the NFL's delivery sponsor, Uber Eats turned football food cues into deals and 'proved' the conspiracy — 672% more first-time orders, 2026 US Grand Effie.

Uber Eats (Uber)

The ideaFrame football as a conspiracy to sell food, proving it with fries-like goalposts and a salad-named stadium — every proof carrying an Uber Eats deal.substantial

What it had to solve

Uber Eats was the NFL's official on-demand food-delivery sponsor, but the deal was mostly an awareness play in a crowded sports-marketing market, and orders in a maturing US category needed direct response. The insight was behavioral: Uber Eats orders spiked when its commercials ran next to merchant food ads in the same break — cravings, not logos, drove action.

How it works

Uber Eats became the NFL's official on-demand food-delivery sponsor, but the media buy alone was not moving orders. Data showed Uber Eats conversions surged when its ads ran beside food-merchant ads in the same break — craving, then delivery. So instead of more sponsorship impressions, Uber Eats and agency Special US gave Americans a reason for the craving: football, they argued, is a decades-long conspiracy to sell food.

Every element of the game became 'evidence': yellow goalposts like fries, a halftime show sponsored by fruit, players named Pepper, Ham and Rice, and a stadium — Caesars Superdome — named after a salad. Each proof carried a bespoke gameday deal, from cheesehead jokes tied to pizza to Martha Stewart's Super Bowl Caesar Salad sold exclusively in the app after banners renamed the stadium 'Caesars Salad?'.

The conspiracy climaxed at Super Bowl LIX with 'A Century of Cravings', in which Matthew McConaughey rewrote football history as the National Foodball League. The platform then returned for the 2025–26 NFL season with Bradley Cooper's 'Bradley's Mission' and Parker Posey teasers, keeping the joke running across broadcast, social and in-game integrations.

Judged on results, the campaign is credited by WARC with a 672% increase in average weekly first-time orders and 310,000 incremental Super Bowl orders, and by its One Show entry with 3x app sessions quarter-over-quarter and $225M in earned-media value. It took the Grand Effie at the 2026 Effie Awards US Gala, plus Golds in Delivery Services and Brand Integration & Entertainment Partnerships.

Why it lands

  • It inverted the problem: instead of buying more football visibility, it made football itself the advertisement for ordering food.
  • It turned the brand's own data — cravings spike beside food ads — into a cultural narrative anyone could repeat.
  • Every joke doubled as commerce: the 'proof' was the promotion, so entertainment and direct response ran on the same track.
  • It gave the NFL sponsorship a distinctive asset no rival could copy, then kept the platform alive season after season.

What it did

WARC records a 672% rise in average weekly first-time orders and 310,000 incremental Super Bowl orders — the brand's most commercially successful campaign. The One Show entry reports app sessions up 3x quarter-over-quarter, featured merchants lifting up to 80%, $225M earned-media value across 1,000+ placements, and a 2026 US Grand Effie plus Golds in Delivery Services and Brand Integration & Entertainment Partnerships.

What you can take

When a sponsorship can't outspend the category, turn the media moment itself into an entertainment premise, and make every beat of the joke a commerce trigger — the absurdity becomes the deal.

Since then

The campaign returned for the 2025–26 NFL season and became Uber Eats' ongoing football platform. At the 2026 Effie Awards US Gala, Uber Eats won the Grand Effie — selected from the year's top Gold winners — with additional Golds, and Effie rankings named Uber Eats the most effective brand and Uber the most effective marketer of the year in the US. WARC awarded the case study a Bronze in its 2025 Awards for Effectiveness, and the One Show recognized the entry in 2025.
