BTS's Love Yourself Album Becomes UNICEF Anti-Violence Campaign, Raising 4.5 Billion KRW
BTS and Big Hit turned 'Love Yourself First' into UNICEF #ENDviolence campaign, raising funds and speaking at the UN.

What it had to solve
In 2017, BTS released Love Yourself: Her, whose core message was self-esteem and self-love; the team wanted it to create real social impact, not just marketing talk.
How it works
On 2017-11-01, BTS and its agency Big Hit Entertainment signed an agreement with the Korean Committee for UNICEF in Seoul to launch the LOVE MYSELF campaign, supporting UNICEF's #ENDviolence program (ending violence against children and adolescents). Its starting point was the album Love Yourself: Her released that month: leader RM said at the press conference that the group wanted to emphasize the importance of self-esteem — people must first learn to love themselves before they can view others and society with warmth.
In execution, the team turned the message into participatory public-benefit content: in 2017-10, it first used an airship teaser to preview the campaign; at the 11-01 launch, it donated 500M KRW; it then released official merchandise and Kakao/LINE donation stickers, opened UNICEF donation booths at every stop of BTS's global tour, and continued to amplify the message through promotional videos and social media. On 2018-09-24, BTS became the first Korean music group to speak at the United Nations General Assembly, and the theme was still 'Speak Yourself'.
The result exceeded typical corporate CSR: the official timeline showed that donations surpassed 1.1 billion KRW in 2018-05, surpassed 2.6 billion KRW in 2019-11, and surpassed 4.5 billion KRW in 2021-12; UNICEF's 2021-10 figure stated that USD 3.6 million had been raised to end violence, bringing about 5 million tweets and 50 million+ interactions. In 2021-03, the two sides upgraded the cooperation to a global multi-country agreement (MCA), and BTS and Big Hit donated more than USD 1 million again, as well as merchandise and album proceeds.
UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore called the partnership 'groundbreaking' in helping young people around the world speak up about violence and bullying; the campaign was included in UNICEF's flagship report State of the World's Children 2021 and described as the first successful case of cooperation with South Korea.
Why it lands
- Turning the album's abstract theme into participatory action moved brand value beyond content and gave it a real social landing point.
- Donation was only the starting point: tour donation booths, donation stickers, and the United Nations speech formed a complete set of content that allowed fans to join at any time.
- The official timeline published fundraising amounts month by month, and transparency made fans willing to contribute continuously.
- Partnering with a third-party organization such as UNICEF gave the brand's purpose credibility and a global execution network.
What it did
According to the official timeline, as of 2021-12, more than 4.5 billion KRW had been raised (UNICEF's 2021-10 figure for ending violence was USD 3.6 million), with a cumulative total of about 5 million tweets and 50 million+ interactions; in 2021-03, it was upgraded to a global multi-country agreement and a further commitment was made to donate more than USD 1 million, and it was included by UNICEF in the State of the World's Children 2021 report.
What you can take
Turning a brand's core value into participatory social action changes fans into co-initiators, extending the theme beyond songs.
Since then
LOVE MYSELF became a benchmark: in 2021-03, upgraded to a global agreement with UNICEF, committing over USD 1 million; in 2021-10, cited in UNICEF's State of the World's Children report, with 5 million tweets and 50 million interactions. The message persists in BTS's work, and the donation-booth model was widely referenced.
