What it had to solve
Curator Dennis Nothdruft, head of exhibitions at London's Fashion and Textile Museum, built the show around what makes Sui singular: a designer who treats fashion as a multidisciplinary world of garments, cosmetics, graphics, interiors, music and subculture.
The idea
Skip the timeline: hang Sui's work as thematic islands — Mod, Punk, Hippie, Schoolgirl, Victorian, Fairytale — and enter through a teenager's bedroom.
How it works
More than a hundred ensembles and hundreds of objects are grouped by the origin of each collection's inspiration rather than by date; the exhibition opens on Sui's own line — 'For a young girl it all starts in her bedroom' — letting the bedroom stand for how music, images and identity accumulate. The show debuted at the Fashion and Textile Museum in 2017 and has toured ever since.
What it did
A touring institution for nearly a decade: the Museum of Arts and Design, New York (2020), Phoenix Art Museum (2025), and Cranbrook Art Museum in Sui's home state of Michigan from October 21, 2026 to February 28, 2027, where the grunge and punk rooms land as lived cultural memory for curators and visitors alike.
Background
'The World of Anna Sui' is not a career retrospective in the usual sense. Curated by Dennis Nothdruft, head of exhibitions at London's Fashion and Textile Museum, it debuted there in 2017 and has toured ever since, arriving at Cranbrook Art Museum near Sui's native Detroit from October 21, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
The organizing decision is to abandon chronology. More than a hundred ensembles and hundreds of objects are grouped by theme and by the origins of each collection's inspiration — Mod, Punk, Hippie, Schoolgirl, Victorian, Fairytale — an arrangement Cranbrook chief curator Laura Mott describes as multiple 'islands' that make up the entirety of the Anna Sui world.
The entry point is Sui's own line, 'For a young girl it all starts in her bedroom': the bedroom as the space where music, clothing, images and identity intersect, miniature enough to hold fantasy and memory side by side. It frames how Sui filters decades of references — from New York's 1980s downtown scene to MTV-era grunge — through one personal point of view.
At Cranbrook the show doubles as a homecoming. Sui grew up in metro Detroit, and her collaborations with the city's music culture — including the yellow-and-black uniforms she designed for Jack White's Third Man Records in 2012 — sit alongside Punk and Grunge rooms that read as lived memory rather than fashion history.
Why it lands
Sui's work is recognizable precisely because it is a world, not a sequence — thematic islands let visitors inhabit the world instead of walking a timeline.
The bedroom entry makes the curation argument literal: every collection starts in the private accumulation of influences.
Grouping by inspiration rather than date lets a visitor who knows nothing about fashion history still feel why each world hangs together.
The touring format proved the concept — the show has stayed on the road for nearly a decade across three continents of venues.
What you can take
When a body of work is defined by its point of view, organize the exhibition by that point of view — chronology would flatten exactly what makes it sing.
Since then
As of October 2026 the exhibition is installed at Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on view October 21, 2026 through February 28, 2027 — its stop in the region where Sui grew up and where her Detroit music ties give the Punk and Grunge sections particular resonance.
