What it had to solve
Amazon's many services had grown into separate visual languages, making the ecosystem harder to navigate. The task was to make Prime, Fresh, Alexa, Pharmacy, Business and other brands feel connected without flattening their differences.
The idea
Make the Amazon Smile, orange and Ember Modern fixed points, then let each service flex photography, color and tone around them.
How it works
Amazon XCM and Koto built a brand architecture with fixed points and flex points: a warmer Smile, a custom Ember Modern type family, disciplined color use, cohort rules and delivery-network applications from site surfaces to packages and vehicles.
What it did
The One Show says the system launched in May 2024, reached over 2.2 billion daily visitors in key markets and spanned 15 major marketplaces. It won a 2025 Bronze Pencil and a TDC Communication Design award.
Background
Amazon Brand Architecture addressed a scale problem hiding in plain sight. The One Show case describes more than 50 subsidiary brands that had developed their own visual languages across commerce, cloud, logistics, grocery, healthcare and entertainment.
The creative answer was a system of fixed and flexible elements. The Smile, Amazon orange and Ember Modern type create fast recognition, while cohorts such as Fresh, Alexa and healthcare can adapt photography, color and tone to their own use cases.
The system launched in May 2024 and was used across homepage, app, Prime Day, delivery and major customer-facing brands. The One Show reported reach across 15 major marketplaces and more than 2.2 billion daily visitors in key markets; TDC also recognized the work as a Communication Design winner.
Why it lands
It turned a brand architecture problem into an interface and logistics problem, not just a logo exercise.
The fixed-and-flex model made consistency practical for a company with dozens of visible services.
The delivery network became a media surface, extending identity into the real world.
The system respected local and category differences while making every touchpoint unmistakably Amazon.
What you can take
For a huge portfolio, the clever move is not one logo for everything; it is deciding what must stay fixed so everything else can flex.
Since then
Amazon continued expanding the system through 2025, including additional locales and customer-facing brands. The awards recognition matters because the work is mostly invisible when successful: customers simply move across Amazon services with fewer visual fractures.
