Activision launches Black Ops 7's fake tech firm The Guild in the real world — ADC Gaming
Activision marketed Black Ops 7 by launching its fictional robotics villain as a real company — fake magazine covers, ads and an IPO before the reveal.

What it had to solve
Black Ops 7's antagonist is The Guild, a robotics corporation that markets 'tech you can trust' — so instead of another cinematic trailer, Activision needed a launch that dramatized the game's themes of AI, surveillance and the military-industrial complex before players ever saw the game.
How it works
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, developed by Treyarch, is set in 2035 and pits players against The Guild — a robotics mega-corporation that claims to be humanity's last line of defense while selling 'tech you can trust'. For the launch, Activision's CMO Tyler Bahl wanted marketing 'as bold and thought-provoking as the game itself'. Agency 72andSunny and digital studio Mutiny answered with an idea that refused the usual trailer: make the game's fictional villain real, and let the audience meet it before the reveal.
On August 11, 2025, posters for a technology company called The Guild appeared around San Francisco with QR codes leading to theguild.io — a fully-built corporate website with a mission statement, investor language and product pages for the robots featured in the game. A film campaign titled 'Don't Fear Tomorrow' followed, along with sponsored covers in Wired and Forbes and aggressive billboards across Silicon Valley: 'You don't need more friends, you need more security', 'The biggest lie tech ever told is that it's on your side', 'We're not owned by a tech billionaire, are you?'.
The fiction was maintained to an extreme: The Guild's CTO staged a public IPO announcement, with a film of an executive ringing the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange. Real influencers — including The Financial Audit and former Navy SEAL Shawn Ryan — reacted as if the company existed, and prediction platform Kalshi even created a custom market. Gaming and tech media covered the mystery company before Activision revealed the truth at the worldwide Black Ops 7 showcase in August, when The Guild's propaganda film became the villain's introduction.
The stunt let audiences live through the game's core theme — corporate technology propaganda — instead of being told about it, and it became one of the most discussed launch campaigns of 2025. At the ADC 105th Annual Awards in May 2026, The Guild was named Best of Discipline in Gaming. The campaign traveled far beyond paid media: every 'is this real?' article, influencer reaction and meme market was earned attention for a game that would launch on November 14, 2025.
Why it lands
- Launching the game's villain as a real company makes the audience experience the theme (corporate propaganda) rather than watch an ad explain it.
- Using credible infrastructure — Wired and Forbes covers, an IPO film, a full corporate site — made the fiction indistinguishable from a real tech launch, which is what drove coverage.
- Attack ads aimed at Silicon Valley tech billionaires gave the fictional firm a personality and a conflict before the game ever introduced it.
- The reveal became a second campaign: press coverage of the prank amplified the launch beyond anything paid media alone could buy.
- The Guild site itself teased real in-game elements as 'consumer products', turning lore into content fans could explore for weeks.
What it did
Two weeks of 'is it real?' coverage from influencers, tech and gaming press and a Kalshi market; the stunt became one of 2025's most discussed launch campaigns and won Best of Discipline in Gaming at ADC 105th (May 2026); game launched Nov 14 2025.
What you can take
If the product's theme is deception, don't explain it — perform it: a fiction built with real media infrastructure makes audiences feel the message and earns coverage that no ad buy can replicate.
Since then
Activision confirmed the fiction at its worldwide Black Ops 7 showcase in August 2025, and the game launched November 14, 2025. The Guild campaign was recognized as Best of Discipline in Gaming at the ADC 105th Annual Awards in May 2026 and was widely discussed as one of the boldest launch stunts of the year, with reactions from influencers, gaming media and even a Kalshi prediction market during the hoax window. Its legacy is a template for 'fiction-first' launches, though its measurable effect on sales was never disclosed.
