要解决的问题
Launch the latest edition of 2K's WWE SuperCard, a free mobile card-battling game with more than 11 million global downloads, whose Season 3 added collectible Superstars and Legends, the series' first real-time gameplay mode and three new card tiers.
The idea
Edit real archival footage of WWE's most famous match losses so the Superstars look devastated — not by losing at WrestleMania, but by losing in a phone card game.
如何实现
barrettSF and Where the Buffalo Roam combed films of WWE's greatest Superstar match losses and tweaked the results so the Superstars looked traumatized over losing matches in WWE SuperCard on their phones. The campaign went live Thursday, November 17, 2016, on digital banners and video, on WWE's weekly flagship broadcasts Raw and SmackDown Live, and integrated into live programming.
产生的效果
The campaign ran across digital and WWE's two flagship weekly TV shows with featured Superstars and Hall of Famers including John Cena, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Ric Flair; the game behind it counted more than 11 million global downloads.
背景
To launch Season 3 of WWE SuperCard, 2K's mobile card-battling game, barrettSF built the campaign out of the most reliable emotional footage in wrestling: real losses. The agency and production partner Where the Buffalo Roam scoured films of WWE's greatest Superstar match losses and tweaked the results so it looked like the Superstars were traumatized — over losing matches in WWE SuperCard on their phones.
The result, as LBB put it: dramatic, sad, and most of all, completely ridiculous. The work featured iconic Superstars and Hall of Famers like John Cena, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Ric Flair, and went live on November 17, 2016 across digital banners and video.
The media plan leaned on the fiction that these legends care about the app as much as the ring: creative ran on WWE's weekly flagship broadcasts, Raw and SmackDown Live, and was integrated into live programming. Season 3 itself added the series' first real-time gameplay mode, three new card tiers and an increased roster of WWE and NXT Superstars, in a game developed by Cat Daddy Games with Visual Concepts that had passed 11 million downloads.
为什么有效
Real match-loss footage carries genuine, famous emotion — recutting it costs less than staging and borrows decades of fan memory.
The gap between the gravity of the footage and the triviality of a card-game loss is the joke, and it flatters the audience's fandom.
Featuring Cena, The Rock and Ric Flair made the game's collectible Superstar roster itself the proof of the campaign's premise.
Running on Raw and SmackDown Live put the app in front of exactly the audience that would want to collect its heroes.
可以借鉴什么
Found footage beats new footage when the emotions are real: recutting genuine superstar heartbreak made a silly card-game loss feel like a career-defining defeat.
