要解决的问题
Wren, a US microbrand not yet three years old and known only for dive watches, wanted to show it could do more than divers. Founder Craig Karger, who saw the Vessel tower at Hudson Yards from his New Jersey window every day, wrote a short brief: an integrated-bracelet sports watch built for 2075, not 1975.
The idea
A sapphire crystal with curved facets on top and the same facets cut as a negative underneath, so the dial reads clean from every angle — the reason the watch exists.
如何实现
Designer Max Resnick (Anoma A1) drew a 39mm cushion case in 904L steel around the crystal shape. The first prototypes were a compromise: 5 usable crystals from 100, with straight underside facets. When Wren insisted the underside mirror the top, its manufacturer refused — as did every other maker it called — until a specialist that machines whole sapphire cases agreed. Four of five second-round crystals survived.
产生的效果
The Vessel opened for preorder in October 2026 at $2,900 (steel sunray dial) and $3,400 (meteorite dial), limited to 150 numbered pieces each, delivering Q1 2027. Karger believes — with a stated caveat — that no production watch has combined faceting and a curved underside before, and says the crystal costs more to make than the movement beneath it.
背景
Wren, a US microbrand not yet three years old and previously defined entirely by dive watches, wanted a watch that proved what else it could do. Founder Craig Karger — who watched the Vessel structure at Hudson Yards from his New Jersey window — wrote a short brief: an integrated-bracelet sports watch that doesn't look like another 1970s Genta design, "built for 2075, not 1975", with a faceted sapphire crystal at its centre as the reason the watch exists.
British designer Max Resnick, who trained in automotive design, spent two years drawing a 39mm cushion case in 904L steel around a crystal shape nobody had made: curved facets on top, and the same curved facets repeated underneath as a precise negative, every inner facet lined up with its partner on the outside. Faceted crystals usually bend and shift the dial as the wrist tilts; the mirrored geometry is what stops that. The first batch of 100 yielded five usable crystals, and even those weren't as specified.
When Wren asked for the underside to mirror the top exactly, its manufacturer refused, and so did every other manufacturer it called. A specialist better known for making entire watch cases out of sapphire said yes; the second prototypes came back exactly as drawn, with four of five surviving. The rest of the watch had to keep up — a proprietary quick-release bracelet with microadjustment built into the links, a Sellita SW300-1 movement, 70m water resistance, and two dials (steel sunray and meteorite) carrying aqua seconds hands as a nod to Wren's first watch.
为什么有效
Integrated sports watches all trace back to the same 1970s Genta drawings, so being different required a new centre of gravity.
A doubly faceted crystal solves the dial-distortion problem that normally stops makers from cutting facets at all.
Every curved facet must be polished individually and matched on the underside — no repeatable shape, so factories declined.
Prototyping in the open at three watch fairs, with no photos allowed, tested the idea before committing to tooling.
可以借鉴什么
Make the hardest component the organizing idea and the rest of the product must earn its place around it — and expect suppliers to refuse anything without a repeatable shape.

Preorders opened exclusively at wrenwatches.com with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2027; neither launch configuration will be produced again. A black rubber strap on the same quick-release system sells separately for $195.
