要解决的问题
A mobile network is not easily tangible for the public. Vodafone wanted an innovative, dramatic and authentic demonstration of its 4G network's reliability — one where the stunt simply fails if the network does.
The idea
Whiddett drove a complete course with windows blacked out, his only vision a live 4G video call from four smartphones mounted on the roof.
如何实现
Four tablets fixed inside the windscreen gave Whiddett his only view of the outside world, fed by a live video call across the Vodafone 4G network from four smartphones attached to the car's roof. Filmed with Curious Films and Vodafone's own Director of 4G Network, Tony Baird, the shoot became a high-stakes gamble when a blown tyre, broken clutch and broken axle raised the stakes mid-stunt.
产生的效果
Whiddett completed the course with confidence and the 4G network carried his vision throughout; he called it the biggest challenge of his career. No reach figures were disclosed.
背景
In July 2016 Vodafone ran one of its most innovative marketing activations: drift car sensation Mad Mike Whiddett completed a full drift course with his windows completely blacked out. His only vision came through four tablets fixed to the inside of his windscreen, showing a live video call carried across the Vodafone 4G network from four smartphones attached to the roof of his car.
The #4GRedline stunt had been under discussion with creative agency FCB since December 2014 and was green-lit early in 2016. Vodafone's head of brand and insights Lou Kuegler framed the logic: 'it's one thing to say we have a reliable network, it's another to demonstrate it.' The shoot was what the brand called a high-stakes game — unless Whiddett nailed the stunt, there was no story. A blown tyre, a broken clutch and a broken axle raised the stakes further, but the network delivered the vision he needed to manoeuvre the car with confidence.
Whiddett called it the most extreme and challenging stunt of his career, and said the rapid switching between screens made him feel car sick for the first time in his life. FCB Asia Pacific ECD James Mok said the goal was to show the reliability of a network that is not easily tangible for the public, crediting a collaboration between Vodafone's marketing, network and device teams, Curious Films, Whiddett's team and FCB.
为什么有效
The demonstration inverts the usual claim structure: instead of asserting reliability, the stunt makes the network the driver's only sensory link, so success is the proof.
Real mechanical failures during the shoot — tyre, clutch, axle — turned a controlled stunt into an authentic stress test, which is what made the story credible.
It shows the value of patience in stunt development: an idea held for eighteen months before being green-lit, then executed without compromise.
可以借鉴什么
The strongest network claim is a demonstration with real stakes: when failure is visible and physical — a driver who cannot see — the product claim proves itself without a single statistic.
