要解决的问题
Starling, one of the UK's leading digital banks and in 2018 the first mobile bank to launch business accounts (no monthly fees, in-app marketplace), wanted work that celebrated the passion, determination and blind faith of SME owners, grew that customer base, and reinforced its proposition as a national UK bank.
The idea
A business owner's shed-office takes off on her start-up journey, ending in a 'murmuration' of SMEs that made it — shot with miniatures, not CG.
如何实现
The 60-second spot 'Helping Business Fly', directed by Elliot Dear through Blinkink, follows a business owner waving goodbye to her family as her shed/home office literally takes off with the help of the Starling app, riding the highs and lows of starting up before breaking through the clouds to join a murmuration of fellow SMEs. It was filmed with miniatures and practical effects augmented by CG, scored like a Hollywood family movie re-recorded with a full orchestra, and launched in the TV half-time of the Six Nations England vs Ireland match on 23 February, backed by national premium outdoor and radio.
产生的效果
No campaign results were disclosed; CEO Anne Boden framed the goal as making business owners feel inspired and courageous enough to think 'they can do it as well'.
背景
In February 2020 Starling Bank launched 'Helping Business Fly', its first campaign from a new agency line-up of Wonderhood Studios and media agency Bountiful Cow. The work celebrated the characteristics SME owners share — passion, determination and a little blind faith — and was designed to build the bank's small and medium-sized enterprise customer base while reinforcing Starling as a national UK bank.
The 60-second film follows a small business owner who waves goodbye to her supportive family before her shed-cum-home office literally takes off with the help of the Starling app. Her epic adventure traces the relatable highs and lows of starting a business, finishing as she breaks through the clouds to join a 'murmuration' of other SMEs that have also made it.
Director Elliot Dear of Blinkink insisted on miniatures and practical effects, augmented with CG only for finishing touches — real light, real lenses and organic model movement giving the film a hand-crafted authenticity no purely digital pipeline simulates. A Hollywood-style score re-recorded with a full orchestra set the tone of optimism and bravery. The launch grabbed the TV half-time of the Six Nations England vs Ireland match on Sunday 23 February, followed by prominent placements and national premium outdoor and radio.
为什么有效
The flying shed literalises every founder's private fantasy — the humble start-up base becoming a vehicle — which is why the metaphor reads instantly to business owners.
The murmuration ending reframes Starling's customer base as a flock: thousands of small businesses flying together, a visual argument for a bank built around them.
Choosing miniatures over CG made the craft itself the message for a bank whose pitch is doing things differently from incumbent banks.
可以借鉴什么
Craft choices carry positioning: building the world in miniatures made a digital bank feel hand-made and human — exactly the warmth a challenger needs against branch banks.
